A Terrible Tragedy -

About two o'clock Friday afternoon our quiet village was startled by the clanging of the fire bell, and when the blaze was located it proved that the C. L. Houghton residence in the north part of town was in flames.

The firemen responded promptly and their efficient work soon extinguished the fire, when to the horror of all it was discovered upon entering the kitchen, that Mr. Houghton had expired in the flames. The body, burned past recognition, was found beside the stove.

The sheriff and coroner were summoned, but no formal inquest was held as the tragedy was clearly the result of an accident.

Charles L. Houghton was born in Michigan 85 years ago, although the exact date of his birth is unknown. He came to Nebraska in 1872 and located on a homestead in the Loup Valley about five miles northwest of Palmer. It was while on a journey to the old Shell Creek grist mill in 1872 that Mr. Houghton was out in a terrible blizzard in which both feet were frozen. He never entirely recovered from this misfortune. For several years he had suffered from rheumatism and had been almost helpless.

Many years ago Mr. Houghton disposed of his homestead and he and his wife moved to Palmer. His wife died a few years ago and since that time he had lived alone. He cared little for companionship, in fact he seemed to prefer solitude, for several times, friends had offered him a home where he would have received the best of care, but such offers were always refused.

Little is known concerning his relatives, although he had mentioned having a brother somewhere in Nebraska, but they had not communicated for years.

Mr. Houghton enlisted in Co. D. 3rd Michigan Cavalry and served four years and four months in the Civil War.

The funeral was held at the cemetery Saturday afternoon.
