From the "Springfield Republican," 28 July 1898:
Prominent Worcester man Found Dead in His Room.
...found dead in bed at his home in Worcester yesterday morning.
Through some accident an automatic gas jet in Mr. Curtis's room was left turned on during the night and he was asphyxiated.
He was 91 years old and had always enjoyed the best of health.
He was one of the honored men in Worcester, which had always been his home.
He was a member of the first city government and before that had been a selectman of the town....
He leaves no widow or children.⁴
