NewspaperJun 24, 2009The pilot of an F-16 that went down in Utah’s west desert died in the crash, according to Air Force officials.

HAFB officials have not released the pilot's name but TV station WLOS in North Carolina is reporting that the pilot killed was from that state. According to a report on the station's Web site, the family of 28-year-old Air Force Captain George Bryan Houghton was notified Tuesday morning that he did not survive the crash.

The fighter jet went down at the Utah Test and Training Range around 10:25 p.m. Monday night, according to Air Force authorities. A search team located the wreckage of the plane in a remote area of the range.

The F-16 is assigned to the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill AFB.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.

Memorial services Friday for Capt. Houghton

A memorial service has been set for 4:21 p.m. Friday in Hangar 37 to honor the life and service of Capt. George Houghton, a 388th Fighter Wing pilot who died when the F-16 he was flying crashed at the Utah Test and Training Range Monday.

Capt. George Houghton was part of a four-ship of F-16s flying a close air support mission that involved training with ground forces. The Candler, N.C., native was part of the 421st Fighter Squadron.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our condolences go out to George's family and the 421st Fighter Squadron," said Col. Scott Dennis, 388th Fighter Wing commander. "We lost an irreplaceable member of our Air Force and he will be greatly missed."

The wing ceased flying operations the day after the mishap, but resumed its flying schedule on Wednesday.

"Although this has been a difficult time for us all, the biggest honor we deliver to him is to continue his work and get back to the mission," Dennis said. "The training he was doing was critical to our Air Force and nation. He was getting ready for an upcoming deployment where he would have saved countless lives overseas."

Houghton's wife, Josie, offered her appreciation for the support she's received.

"I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

The Patchoque Poisoning Case

The case of Capt. Samuel N. Smith, who is charged with attempting to procure his wife's death by means of poison, administered by his servant girl, Annie Houghton, in October last, came up again yesterday before Justice Smith at Patchogue, Long Island. District Attorney Tuthill had a conversation with Capt. Smith, Mrs. Dayton, Annie Houghton, and Justice Smith, and said the examination would have to be adjourned till such time as Mrs. Smith was able to appear. He said the character of the poison had never been ascertained, and an analysis must be made. He reviewed the testimony of the girl Annie Houghton. Mrs Smith is still confined to her room at her father's house, No. 41 Tillary street, Brooklyn.1
