Obituary

An 82-year-old Braxton County man died yesterday at the Gassaway Hospital after a long illness. He was Homer N. Houghton of Strange Creek, a retired fanner and a member of the Walnut Grove Methodist Church at Strange Creek Surviving are eight sons: Lester of Akron, Ohio, Minter of Toledo, Ohio, Marvin of Hookersville, Charles and Ernest, both of Charleston, Earl of Birch River, and Flem and Virgil, both of Strange Creek; two daughters, Mrs. Norman Goad and Mrs. Albert Dean, both of Strange Creek. Two brothers, Minter of Sandyville and Thomas E. of Huntington; three sisters, Mrs. RE. Johnson of Charleston, Mrs. Maude Mick of Winchester, MA. and Mrs. J.O. Bleigh of Weston; a half-sister, Mrs. Roger Ghormley of Tahlequah, OK, 37 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. EST tomorrow at the Walnut Grove Church by the Rev. James Rogers. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken from the Barlett mortuary at Gassaway to the church one hour before the service.

Widen Pioneer Worker Dies.

Charles W. Houghton, 78, of Strange Creek, died Thursday, September 4, 1952 in a Charleston hospital following a short illness although he had not enjoyed good health for a long time. He was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. T.R. Houghton and one of Clay county's finest citizens. Surviving are six daughters; Mrs. Prussia Gibson, Mrs. Maysel Given, Mrs. Lorah Martin and Mrs. Iva Paintiff, all of Strange Creek, Mrs. Ella Sigman and Mrs. Mozelle Brown, both of Widen, Alton of Strange Creek, Wilbert of Beckley and Carl of Richwood; four sisters, Mrs. Maude Mick of Winchester, MA, Mrs. Martha Johnson of Charleston, Mrs. Lucy Bleigh of Weston, and Mrs. Lilly Ghromley of Oklahoma; three brothers, Homer of Strange Creek, F.E. of Huntington, and Jim of Shandyville, his step-mother, Mrs. Rinda Houghton of Oklahoma and 22 grandchildren. Funeral services were at the Walnut Grove Methodist Church, Sunday morning at 11 o'clock with Rev. Lloyd Stidom officiating and burial was in the Church Cemetery under the direction of the Clay Funeral Home. He was a retired employee of Elk River Coal and Lumber Company at Widen and has been a member of Walnut Grove Methodist Church for over 30 years.
