Deceased Name: Executive, athlete Charles Houghton Jr., 79, Illinois-born Charles G. Houghton Jr., a business executive and former athlete, died Wednesday of heart failure and cancer in a St. Louis hospital at age 78. He was chairman of Houghton & Associates in St. Louis, a manufacturer's representative specializing in the labeling of oil products. Previously, he was president of Froedtert Malt, vice president of Standard Container, a director of the U.S. Brewers Association and an executive at Pittsburgh Plate Glass, the Cupples Co., Manufacturers Bank and Owens-Illinois Glass.
Mr. Houghton played on the St. Louis Octopus hockey team in the early 1940s and was a national doubles squash champion in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he was an owner of the St. Louis Soccer Stars and a director of the National Soccer League. A native of Dixon, Ill., he was a 1939 graduate of Harvard University, where he earned nine varsity letters in football, ice hockey, baseball and tennis and was captain of the all-American hockey team.⁶
