ResearchWilliam Brooks: I am a musicologist currently investigating a number of settings of the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields." One such setting was by Albert Henry Houghton (published in Boston in 1918). I had known about Evangeline -- in fact, Albert's setting of "In Flanders Fields" is dedicated to her -- but I didn't realize that she settled in England. I think I explained that my immediate interest is in Albert's setting of "In Flanders Fields", which is one of about 35 settings made during and after WWI. My curiosity about these was sparked by a study of the setting made by Charles Ives, and I'm presently researching a book that will (among other things) attempt to describe the place this poem, and its musical settings, occupied in American culture at the time.
