Occupation1836Bolton, Worcester Co., MA, USA, entered the large mercantile establishment of Abraham Holcomb. He remained 5 years and rose to be chief clerk in the vicinity of Boston, then went to Brattleboro, VT, and became a clerk in the retail hardware, drug and grocery store of Williston & Tyler, remaining 8 years, then entered the emplyment of Samuel Williston, who manufactured woven elastic goods of rubber, and grew to be Williston's trusted friend and confidential advisor. In 1850 the Nasawannuck Manufacturing Company was organized for elastic fabrics. Mr. Sawyer was chosen as it's first treasurer and general agent, and one of the directors. He also became interested in other business enterprises in Easthampton. He became director of the Easthampton Rubber thread Company, the Easthampton Gas Company, and the Willaston Mills, being the treasurer and general agent from 1871 to 1875; also director and president for a short time, and treasurer of the Glendale Elastic Fabrics Company. His able management saved the Willaston Mills. He was prominent in the First National Bank of Easthampton, President of the Easthampton Savings Bank; trustee of the State Lunatic Asylum at Northampton from 1874 until his death; trustee of Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary at South Hadley since 1873; trustee of W. Aston Seminary since 1867 and for several years treasurer. In 1859 and 1861 he visited Europe on business trips.3

He was a member of the Payson Church and deacon for 12 years and superintendant of the Sunday School.3
