BiographyWhitcomb: Built a house in 1862. He was a major stockholder in the Bolton Shoe company, and this land was part of th Shoe Company's holdings. It was owned by the Houghton family until about 1925. Sherman Houghton owned several acres of land where the Bolton Shoe Company had been, and in 1869 he deeded the land to his daughter, Sarah Houghton, who married her cousin, Dr. Warren Houghton...".

Several members of the Houghton family lived in the northwest section of Bolton in the first half of the nineteenth century--on Bare Hill, Green, Harvard, and Vaughn Hill Roads. The first known owner of this house was the prominent Sherman Willard Houghton (1807-1894), son of Thomas and Asenath Houghton. He married Sarah Nelson in 1832, and it is possible that the house was built at the time of, or shortly after their marriage. Although he appears to have been a farmer at this location for many years, he was also one of the major stockholders in Bolton's one signficant stock company of the early industrial period--the Bolton Shoe Company. When the company divested some of its property in three parcels in 1856 and 1857, Sherman Houghton acquired one of the pieces, which apparently included the properties now numbered 662 to 674 Main Street. In 1862 he renovated the house at 674 Main for his own use, and in 1869 deeded the east part of that land to his daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Warren Houghton, where they constructed a house.
If Sherman and his wife Sarah relocated to Main Street in the 1860's, it is likely that they sold this farm at that time to George A. Sampson, who is shown as owner on the 1870 map. He was still farming 68 acres here in the early years of the twentieth century.14,15

Jesse Stafford's Company of Rangers, Maj. Allen's detachment raise for the defense of Vermont, commencing Jan. 18th and ending the first day of Dec., 1780, both days included, Caleb Hoton: pay commences May 19th, 26 days @ 2 L - per Mo. Died Jul. 15, 1780; pay 15-3; 14 S. 6 D. (Vt. Rolls, p. 326). The above did not include travel pay, as indicated on p. 186. Caleb was entitled to two shillings per mile for the light miles distance from Putney to the camp at Pittsford, viz: Capt. Jesse Stafford's Co. for travel from their respective towns to camp; one part to Pittsford, the other to Royalton in Jul. 1780. Caleb Hoton, eight miles - two S. per mile.

In a list of Revol. Soldiers given in Maria Hemmenway's VT Gazateer V. 3, pt. 2, p. 226: Caleb Houghton's name is included as of Putney VT.
For his death see p. 943: " During the Revolutionary war, Pittsburg, being a frontier town, was particularly exposed to the ravages of the enemy, who improved every opportunity to carry on their work of desctruction and punder...After the fort (Fort Vengence) was completed, Major Ebenezer Allen of Tinmouth, with about one hundred and fifty men, was put into command of it. They were scarcely established in their new home before one of their number was missing, Caleb Houghton, a young man aged about twenty years, who came from the East part of the state, went unarmed to the residence of Mrs. Joshua...June to obtain some garment which Mrs. June had washed for him. He had been gone from the house but a short time hence Mrs. June heard the report of a gun. Stepping to the door and looking up along the road, she saw an Indian in the act of transfixing Houghton with his bayonet.
For some time previous to this event, the horrid atrocities of the Indians produced such an effect on Houghton's mind that he had a frightful dream of being captured and tortured by them, and had beeen heard afterwards solemnly to declare that he would never be taken alive by them. These facts were recollected at the fort when Houghton's absence was unexpectedly protracted. And sad fears were entertained as to his fate. A party of men were sent out to look for hi, and after a while they found his corpse about half a mile south of the fort, bearing the marks of a fierce struggle and of savage revenge.
This took place beneath an oak tree which stood about a hundred rods northeast of Mr. June's house and when the land was cleared this tree was thoughtfully spared, and may still (1872) be seen pointing out the spot where Houghton fell, a victim of Indian ferocity. The soldiers took the body of their comrade, carried it to the fort and thence furied it on a small knoll, about fifteen rods east of the present of Samuel Hendee...
Major Allen, to whom was attributed some of the peculiarities of his relative, old Ethan, exasperated by the loss of a good soldier and the audacity of the murder, made strenuous efforts to discover the prepetrators of the deed, but for several days no trace could be found. Allen collected his men in front of the large gate on the east side of the fort and publicly vowed vengeance against all and every Indian that should come within his power, and then, as a memorial of his vow, took a junk bottle, filled it with rum, and stepped out in front of the gate and christened the establishment "Fort Vengeance, " and by that name it was forever after known."
It would appear from the above that Caleb Houghton was returning from Mrs. June's dwelling house in the day time with some laundry, which is a good deal more prosaic story than I heard in Pittsford from an old inhabitant in 1928 (HAH). I was assured that he had been keeping company with a girl down the road, and that he was returning to the fort in the evening after a protracted visit. The present writer hesitates to start a new tradition, but cannot fail to record what appears to be perfectly good post hoc evidence.
Caleb left a large number of admiring relatives in Putney when he joined the Vermont militia, to go with major Ebenezer Allen, a brother of Ethan Allen, to defend the soil of the present state of Vermont against the British and Indians.
His older brother, Deacon Cyrus Houghton, was then living there. Another brother, also older, Ebenezer, who married Hadasseh Houghton, at Petersham, was there; and Aaron, who had married Abraham's daughter, Polly, was also at Putney.
At the close of Caleb's military careeer the State of Vermont owed him a total of 4 E. 18 S. 6 D., which included wages and travel pay.
About three miles south of Putney on the road to Rutland (West side) is to be found a marble monument - the east face inscription: Caleb Houghton, born Bolton, MA., 1760, member of Captain Sanford's company, Major Allen's Detachment. Stationed at this fort Killed by an Indian half a mile South July 15, 1780. His remains removed here May, 1873. Fort Vengence erected in 1780 Stood on this ground."

MONUMENT IN PITTSFORD, VERMONT

This monument is located on the west side of Rt. 7 overlooking the Otter
Creek valley. It is 3.1 miles north of the Maclure Library.

Caleb Houghton, the subject of the foregoing narrative, was a descendant of Robert Houghton who was born in 1658. Robert had one son, Ebenezer, who married Susannah Farnsworth, and died May 15, 1790. A son, Cyrus, born in 1722, was the result of this marriage; and he married Hodessa, daughter of Simeon Houghton of Petersham, and settled in Bolton, Mass., where were born the following children, viz.:

1st, Cyrus, born 1745; 2d, ------ born 1747; 3d, Ebenezer, born 1750, died August 16, 1826; 4th, Olive, born 1752; 5th, Abigail, born 1755; 6th, Mary, born 1757; 7th, Caleb, born 1760; 8th, Aaron, born 1766. The parents, with their children, removed from Bolton to Putney, Vt., before the Revolutionary war.

The first we hear of Caleb Houghton as a soldier was in the year 1777, when he was enrolled in the company commanded by Capt. John Patty in Col. Williams' Regiment. This company was called out Aug. 29th, and was in service twenty-five days. Young Houghton received for this service £2. 10s. 8d.

We next hear of him as a member of Capt. Jesse Safford's company of forty-two men, a part of whom were sent to the fort at Pittsford and a part to Royalton. Houghton was with that part of the company which came to Pittsford and he was allowed pay for eighty miles travel. The total amount of his pay, drawn by the family, February 20th, 1783, was £8.
