Biography'He was only six years old when his father died and thirteen to sixteen when his older brother, William J., was serving as a soldier in the Union Army in the Civil War. Taht left DAvid and his youngest sister Sarah at home with their help at home with the farm work. His brother William sent home as much money as he could. Their mother hired a man named Hank to help with the harvest one summer. William urged her to try to keep him busy over the winter so he would stay for the next year to allow David to go back to school. At age sixteen DAvid began the study of medicine in the office of Dr. George B. Curtis. He entered the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York and graduated at age twenty. He was granted his M.D. degree when he became of age. He practiced medicine in South Canaan, Wayne Co. Carbondale, and settled at Columbia, Pa. In 1880 he came to Scranton., Pa., to take over the practice of DR. Horace Ladd who was going to Philadephia, Pa. Dr. Hand had a successful career of over forty years as a physician and surgeon in Scranton, specializing in medicines for children. He founded the Hand Medicine Co, which originally manufactured and sold ten medicines called, 'Dr. Hand's Patent Remedies for Children.' The trademark uses two open hands with a medicine written on each finger. The most popular one was the teething lotion which is still sold today. Dr. David Bishop Hand died at home on 1 April 1923, aged 75 years.2
