BiographyIn 1838 Oliver farmed in Randolph where he met and married Adeliza Fairbanks. They settled in Weymouth, where Oliver ran a livery stable, stage and express business between Braintree, Weymouth and Boston. In the 1850's Oliver was the tithing Man for the old Braintree-Weymouth church, all the police authority there was for the two towns. After serving in the Civil War, he returned to police duties, as Chief of Police of Weymouth from 1882 to 1902, then continued as a "special officer". He was also a boot maker for 8 years and made feed sacks for 46 years. Active in veteran's organizations, he was a Commander of the local Grand Army of the Republic Post and on the staff of several state Commanders. Attending the National Conventions until 1914, he was an Aide to the national Commander each year after 1906. He was President of the Norfolk Co. Association22
ResearchMLM gives bp of 3 children as New York, NY; unclear why. Census gives MA for all rest.

BiographyJWH: "Clinton still lives at Wappinger Falls. He has served the town and village as justice of the peace, member of the council, assessor, member of the school board, trustee of the library association, and is still in active service. He became a member of the Baptist Church 11,10, 1844; has been organist forty-one years and superintendent of the Sunday School twenty-five years; has never sought an office but the office has sought him."
Dutchess Co. Biog. Record: "Clinton W. Clapp, a substantial citizen of Wappingers Falls, Dutchess county, was born in that thriving village May 28, 1831.

CLINTON Wilde CLAPP was the fifth son of Benjamin & Ruth Houghton Clapp. His father named one of his mills, the Clintondale Mill, after him. He built a 4-story Mansard-roofed, 2nd Empire Brick and stone mansion on South Avenue in the Village of Wappingers Falls, NY in the late 1800's. It was built on part of his father's estate. This victorian mansion was one of the first in the area that had a steam heating system that could be controlled in each room. Mr. Clapp built a large pipe organ in the rear parlor of the home.
During his life Mr. Clapp was a businessman & historian. He wrote and published many articles of historic value in the Wappingers Chronicle during the early 1900's.
He was also an amateur folk painter. Several of his paintings were donated by the Clapp estate to the Grinnell Library in the Village of Wappingers Falls. One of them is a large oil painting of the Clintondale Mill. They can be seen there today.
