ObituaryNov 18, 1903The Daily News - Evening Edition, Batavia, NY 18 Sep 1903 page 1 DR. CHARLES HOUGHTON DEAD Oldest Practicing Dentist in Batavia Expires, Aged 70

Dr. Charles Houghton, Batavia's oldest practicing dentist, died at his home, No. 44 State street, at 10:50 o'clock last night. He had been in ill health since last spring and was confined to his bed 3 1/2 weeks. Dr. Houghton was born at Manlius, Onondaga county, on March 28, 1833, and consequently was seventy years of age. He moved with his parents to Holland,
Erie county, when five years of age. He was a graduate of the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima and began the study of dentistry with the late Dr. Barrows of Warsaw. In 1856 he engaged in the practice of his profession at Attica, remaining there ten years. Since 1860 he had been practicing in Batavia and since October 1, 1883, had been associated with Dr. Dewey, under, the firm name of Houghton & Dewey. He -was a member of the Eighth District Dental Society, of Security Lodge, A.O.U.W., and of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was formerly a director of the Genesee County Loan Association. He was highly respected in all circles. Besides his wife, Dr. Houghton is survived by one daughter, Mrs. I. E. Mecorney of Batavia; a granddaughter. Miss Mabel Mecorney of Batavia; three brothers, Dr. L. Houghton of Huntertown, Ind; Alfred-Houghton of Seville, O and Harley Houghton of Java, and one
sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dorland of Buffalo. He also leaves a nephew, F. H. Houghton of Boston, who, with his wife, is in Batavia. At the request of Dr. Houghton the Rev. W. B. Wagoner will officiate at the funeral, which will be held from his late home at 3 p. m. tomorrow. Services at the grave in Elmwood cemetery will be conducted by Security Lodge. Members of the dental profession in Batavia will act as pall bearers.

BiographyJWH: "Wife died 1897. Although the doctor remembers distinctly family incidents when but two years old, yet he does not remember when he could not read. At an early age his preferences were in the field of law: Natural Law, Force: and of his various published papers his most important are his Cosmic Studies, No.1; Crime; What Shall We do About it? No.2; No.3, Other Worlds Than Ours. The treatment of the subject of crime is not only new, but original in the extreme. Nothing like it has ever appeared before in print in this country or any other. The plan is in brief to require each person to be numbered and compelled to carry his number with him. Then every one caught in crime could at once be identified and his character ascertained. It would be presumptive evidence of a suspected person's guilt that he could not produce his individual number. These papers bring to our knowledge for the first time in human history new but highly important discoveries in their several fields and as he claims with abundant proof to confirm this declaration in the minds of those who read these studies. The doctor came to Batavia, N.Y., in 1870, and has practiced dentistry for 20 or 25 years in that place."3
Alertsecond wife?; JWH gives wife's death in 1897, but 1900 census has wife Amelia; Carolyn Houghton: wife b. c. 1825, Herkimer of Little Falls, NY; d. 18979

BiographyHOUGHTON, HENRY ARVIN, M. D., of Keeseville, Clinton county, N. Y., was born on Christmas day, the 25th of December, 1826, at Lyndon, Vt. He is the second son of Paul Houghton, Esq., of Lyndon, and received his education at the Lyndon Academy. So great was his desire for knowledge that he undertook to defray his own scholastic expenses by working during a portion of each year in the well-known scale manufactory of Messrs. E. & T. Fairbanks, of St. Johnsburg, Vt., where he doubtless imbibed that interest in manufacturing pursuits which characterized him in after life. He commenced his medical studies under Dr. Darling, of Lyndon -the second convert in the State to the doctrines of homœopathy. He afterwards attended a course of lectures at an allopathic college in Woodstock, Vt., finally finishing his course of study at Philadelphia, Pa., where he graduated in March, 1852. He now began practicing homœopathy, in partnership with his old preceptor, in his native town ; his success being so satisfactory that he felt justified in assuming the responsibilities of a family. He found a congenial companion in Miss Sarah D. Page, of St. Johnsburg, and was united in marriage to her about this time. After practicing four years in Lyndon, he removed, by urgent invitation, to Keeseville, a picturesque and thriving village on the Au Sable river, where he has resided for seventeen years, constantly occupied with an extensive practice and numerous consultations, at the same time, however, finding leisure to interest himself deeply in the schools and various manufacturing industries of the district in which he resides.
He was last year President of the New York. State Homœopathic Society, and a very enthusiast in his profession, taking great delight in training the younger aspirants for medical honors, of whom he has already launched on the sea of life twenty, who are now successful physicians.
The character of Dr. Houghton is a happy mixture of the stern unyielding nature of the Green Mountain State and that generous sympathetic spirit which renders its possessor happy by the reflected happiness of others. Living in the Adirondack region, he is passionately fond of nature, and a ride through some of the mountain passes is a high day and festival for him ; the healthy bracing air invigorating his frame and the glorious mountain scenery imparting strength and calmness to his mind. Such men never grow old. (Source : Cleave's Biographical Cyclopædia of Homœopathic Physicians and Surgeons By Egbert Cleave Copyright © Sylvain Cazalet 2002)
