ObituaryMar 21, 2014Lee, ME, USA, LEE - Everett W. "Bill" Houghton, 78, husband of Linda (Arthurs) Houghton, passed away March 18, 2014, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He was born March 5, 1936, in Lee, the son of Vance and Mildred (Gifford) Houghton.

Bill was a self employed truck driver until 1968, when he purchased Houghton Cedar Products from his Uncle "Bun" Houghton. Through the years he employed many local men and made a name for himself as an honest, hard working, kind and generous member of the community. Bill was a trucker at heart which started at an early age. In 1947 he was the champion of the Maine State Soap Box Derby and got to go on to the National Competition in Akron, Ohio. In the 60s Bill was an avid stock car racer at Springfield Speedway where he served as chairman of the Stock Car Association. He went on to sponsor several stock cars around the state. From stock car racing he went on to enjoy many years of pulling trucks throughout the state of Maine where he made many long-term friends. In more recent years he enjoyed traveling with his wife Linda, especially their frequent trips to Canada. They always traveled in style either in their 2002 Ford Thunderbird or his long sought after 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra. People close to Bill remember spending weekends at their camp on Tar Ridge in Prentiss. Many great memories were made with friends and family over the years and the family continues to celebrate Thanksgiving there each year.

Bill will live on forever in the hearts of his loved ones who will remember him as a wonderful dad, role model, friend and hero. In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by four children, Edward "Hazzy" Houghton, Melanie Fuller, Deena Crocker and Darren Whitney, and Hallie Gardner; 11 grandchildren, Kurston, BJ, CJ, Everett, Branden, Dana, Audrey, Lacy, Mark, Bill, and Parker; two great-grandsons, Jakoby and Javon; and two sisters, Ann Parchman, and Eileen Smith. He also leaves his faithful dog, Rosie. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Alanson.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Penobscot Valley Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Lincoln, ME 04457. Those who wish may sign an online register and leave written condolences at www.clayfuneralhome.com.
