EmailMay, 2022My mother was a Houghton, and I have been interested in family history for many years; I helped my father when he started with it, and have
continued his researches since he died. Although my surname is Cooke, I have been able (through FTDNA) to establish with a high degree of
confidence that my ancestral surname is Pennington and I have been able to make a good guess at who the father of my 3x great grandfather
William Cook (b 1818) was.
I am very interested in deep ancestry, and that was the original reason for Y DNA testing. I am now at the stage of trying to find people with Y
tests who have ancestors who are also my ancestors, in order to get a broader understanding of my genetic origins. Hence the poking around in
FTDNA (and other) data to look for suitable close connections.

I have a male Houghton second cousin who has tested with Ancestry, and I would like to ask him to do a Y test, but at present he is going through
real difficulties as his wife has terminal cancer, so that is not appropriate just now.

My Houghton ancestry is very much in the Wigan area of Lancashire, and I am pretty confident about details back to the early 1700s. I made a text
document a year or so ago mainly for family, but there is nothing with copyright in it so it's on a public web page here:

https://www.marwynandjohn.uk/famhist/Houghton-public/PublicHoughtonLineAncestors.html

I suspect the William Houghton b1713 may not be the right one; I have found one b1699 although I think he may be a bit old. The document notes
my likely next steps with records from Winwick.

Please let me know if you think it might be appropriate for me to join the FTDNA Houghton project. Having discovered your Houghton pages, I am
certainly going to look further at this name to see if I can find any matches in my tree to the names on your pages.

With all best wishes
John

Yes, I am happy for you to use my Houghton information in your project. Please note that the web page I gave you the link to is a work in
progress (the online version is from last year) and as of some insights today I can see that I may well be changing some of the earlier stuff -
as you know, this is all about probabilities once you get far enough back. The DNA aspect has indeed given us some super tools, which is why I am
working to try to find testers (or potential testers) for lines I am related to. My own Y results have been truly fascinating. My closest
match for Big Y-700 was (at first) a Pennington in the US; since then there is another even closer that I still need to contact. Of course
many Penningtons on your side of the pond would like to connect with the Penningtons of Furness who have a big family castle still!

You may be amused to hear that I have dined in Hoghton Tower; once at a UK national astronomy conference held in Preston, the conference dinner
was in the hall at Hoghton Tower, which is now used for conferences etc. Discover the epic history of Hoghton Tower in Lancashire

I hope that in due course I will be able to persuade my second cousin to take a Y test; it would certainly be of great interest to me, and
clearly of interest for your project as well. We shall see how things progress; it was his wife who was the family history enthusiast, but my
cousin was also interested in the results, old photographs, and so on that I was able to send them.

I have already uploaded my Ancestry autosomal test data to FTDNA, so have those matches as well. I have tested with Living DNA as well, who
include Y and MtDNA - I am really trying to find all the connections I can. As (and if!) my Houghton researches make progress I will let you know.

Best wishes
John1

NoteBy July, my BigY results had me put into a terminal group R-FT356010
along with a Pennington in the US. Sunsequently (April 2021) I have been
moved into a further group below that, R-FT356044 which I share with a
Pinnington in the UK. (The other one I mentioned yesterday.) I am
hopeful of solving some problems with one of his ancestors which would
give a confirmed tree and DNA connection with the Penningtons!

BiographyPeter was born at 26, Upper Morris Street, Wigan in 1865. By the time of the 1871 Census he was living with his parents Thomas, then a bricklayer, and Elizabeth at Windmill Cottages, Up Holland, ("near Wind Mill"), aged 6. In the 1881 Census for Pemberton, Peter is aged 16, a bricklayer labourer, born in Wigan, living at 5 School Terrace, Goose Green, Pemberton. Peter's father was still a bricklayer so perhaps Peter worked with his father. At that time Peter had no siblings and this was still the case in 1891 when Thomas and Elizabeth still lived at 5 School Terrace. Peter had moved away by that time; he married Annie Turner in 1885.1

NoteA family of Houghtons from Hopewell, NJ moved there @ 1790-1810. My 3 x great grandmother is a Houghton who married John Hogshead (Hogsed) in Mason county, Kentucky in 1815. As for James D Hogshead and Catherine Houghton Hogshead, they left Maysville by crossing the river to Ripley Ohio and purchased land on the hill just east of John Rankin’s hill by 1833 just as the Underground Railroad became very busy through the town. By 1840 they are in Indiana
