Deceased Name: Lois V. (Sheaffer) Houghton
1913 - 2004

Lois V. Houghton, 90, of Aurora, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at Provena Mercy Center, after a short and unexpected illness. She was born December 27, 1913 in Plano, IL.

Lois graduated from Downer College in 1936 and worked as a Graphic Artist and served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over two decades. She was united in marriage to Cholm G. Houghton on March 3, 1946 in Marshalltown, IA. Throughout her life, Lois was an avid painter and bird watcher; sharing her appreciation for nature, classical music and fine arts, with her children, her friends and countless numbers of Cub Scouts and Brownies.

In later years Lois continued to maintain old friendships, while at the same time investing in new ones at Provena Fox Knoll. Special thanks to Sr. Solena for her weekly Art Discussion Group, Sr. Connie for her pastoral care, Terri Lundin for her yoga/exercise group, Dottie Smith for her empathic nursing care and to Pat Beebee for being present in a critical moment of need in Lois' final days. To the entire staff of Provena Fox Knoll, thank-you and may God bless you for the multiple ways you offered compassion and empathy to Lois every day.

Lois was a great encourager and always chose to focus on her blessings. She continued to create clever notes, limericks and hand-illustrated cards in spite of her rheumatoid arthritis, a profound model of joy and hope. Always available for moral support, Lois will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Jean (Wright) and Lyman Sheaffer; her husband, Cholm in 1991; and three infant sons lost in infancy.

Article from: SouthtownStar (Chicago, IL) Article date: January 6, 2009
For Greg Houghton, the glass was never half-full. Instead, it was always bubbling over. Houghton, 59, died Jan. 3 of a heart attack at his home in Homewood. A relentless optimist, Houghton worked as an associate editor for the SouthtownStar and Elite magazine. During the day he wrote and edited stories, helped colleagues and took artful photographs. In the evenings, he focused on his family. Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of 17 years, Bonnie, and two sons, Alex, 16, and Jared, 14. He spent lots of time with his sons and talked about them often, according to co-workers and his wife. "Just the other day, he got a complex Japanese model for Alex with all these tiny little pieces," Bonnie said. "He and Alex sat at the table working on it with these pieces that were smaller than a thimble." Projects involving such detail appealed to Mr. Houghton, and he was deliberate and meticulous in his work. His personality suited such labor, given his huge helping of patience. It was an attribute he displayed most notably on the golf course. An avid player, Mr. Houghton was more than just a casual duffer, according to his friend and boss John Stein. "Probably the biggest thing he taught me about golf was patience," said Stein, deputy managing editor for SouthtownStar. "He was an outstanding putter ... his patience to look at the ball from several angles. Most of what I learned about golf, I learned from Greg." Another golf buddy, Steve Metsch, said Mr. Houghton was the only golfer he has ever known not to swear on the course. Not only did he enjoy the game, Mr. Houghton stopped to appreciate the sport's history and the serene settings it provides. A lifelong outdoorsman, Houghton often stopped Stein on the course to point out a particularly lovely view. "He would stop me on the fairway and say, 'Look at the light coming through the trees right here. How beautiful," Stein said. "He always talked about the beauty in the world." He often observed natural wonders. As a bird watcher, he spotted hundreds of species, his wife said. He was thrilled by the birds he saw on a recent trip to Hawaii. Mr. Houghton was born in Nebraska, and moved with his family to Mount Vernon, NY. After fifth grade, the family moved again, this time to Glen Ellyn, where Mr. Houghton went to high school. A bachelor's degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee followed. After that, Mr. Houghton traveled in Europe for nine months, a trip that gave him a lasting wanderlust. When he returned, he bounced around a few jobs, including selling World Book encyclopedias. It was while working for CNA in Chicago that he met Bonnie. Shortly after, Houghton moved to the south suburbs so he could have room for his dog, a vizsla named Suzuki. "He called himself a transplanted south suburbanite," Bonnie said. Many in Homewood knew Mr. Houghton, largely from his work on the town's rail committee and involvement with the historical society, according to former Homewood trustee Bill Frank. "It's a big loss to this community," Frank said. "He was always the one who operated behind the scenes, the ones you never see, but without those guys, nothing gets done." He got things done at work, too, where he wrote travel stories and other articles for Elite magazine and once edited the Chicago Southland Business magazine. He also contributed to SouthtownStar as an editor for its home section, among other things. "He was very proud of being a journalist," Bonnie said. "It was his dream job." At work, Mr. Houghton had respect as an honest and helpful colleague. Most co-workers remembered him as someone who never talked badly about others. He was a good listener, and always had time to help with a headline or sentence construction. In his downtime, he liked to chat about sports - White Sox and Bears - politics, movies and music. "Greg really liked blues music," Bonnie said. "He also liked Elvis and that era of music." Buddy Guy, the Rolling Stones and Alison Krauss topped his list, and he would sometimes break into song. One indelible impression of Mr. Houghton must be his humility. As quick as he was to offer a compliment to someone, he more quickly - and always graciously - waved off ones he received. "He was more sensitive than most people realized," Bonnie said. "He never realized how many friends he had."3
