She and her husband. Robert, who died in 1961. operated a newsstand from 1938 to 1945 at the B&O Railroad station house. Delaware Avenue and Du Pont Street. They later operated a variety store for about 20 years at 1800 Delaware Ave.
Mrs Houghton was a member of Mount Salem United Methodist Church.
She leaves no immediate survivors.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Doherty Funeral Home. 1900 Delaware Ave , where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Philadelphia,

BRONSON - Doris I. Houghton, age 88, of Bronson, Mich., died Friday morning, Sept. 28, 2007, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She had been residing at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility since December 2006.

Doris was born January 30, 1919, in Burr Oak, Mich., a daughter of Arthur and Nellie (Kuhn) Smith, and graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1937. She then moved to Bronson after her marriage to Elmer Houghton Sr. On Nov. 24, 1937. Elmer died Jan. 9, 2005.

Doris was a homemaker and family Matriarch. Family was a very important part of her life. She always looked forward to and loved family gatherings. Doris was a faithful and active member of the First Congregational Church of Bronson where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She was also a Girl Scout Leader in the Bronson area for 35 years.


Doris was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bronson, a long time member of the Mystic Star O.E.S. #354; a long standing Rotary Ann in Bronson where she was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow and she attended many Rotary Conventions with her husband. She enjoyed reading, bowling, crossword puzzles and card games.

Surviving are: her daughter, Jean Roussey of Bronson; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Keith Tracy of Bronson; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Anne Houghton of Bronson and Elmer and Jackie Houghton Jr. Of Wayland, Mich; grandchildren, Robin (Bryan) Schultz, Scott (Tina ) Andrews, Steve Houghton, Mark (Patty) Houghton, Michael (Kyle) Houghton, Jody (Rod) Sunday, Matthew (Karen) Houghton, Kenneth (Elaine Lirot) Houghton, John (Tatiana) Andrews, Tonya (Doug) McKerchie, Tom (Lee) Bidwell, Mary (Dave) Cleveland, Barbara (Tom) Bertsch and Martin (Lena Herl) Houghton; 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Elmer Houghton, Sr; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Wojack and Paige Andrews; and her sister, Myrtle Nash.




The family will receive friends from 2 -4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of Bronson with Pastor Terry Siler officiating. Interment will follow in Bronson Cemetery.
