ObituaryAug 10, 2004Houston, TX, USA, Houston Chronicle (TX) - August 10, 2004
Deceased Name: Soldier dies month after war wounds The parents of Andy Houghton chronicled his battle for life on the Internet
As 1st Lt. Andrew R. Houghton lay dying from combat wounds in his Walter Reed hospital bed, his younger brother was graduating from Army officer candidate school, an honor that could place him in similar danger.

Houghton, 25, an alumnus of Strake Jesuit Preparatory School in Houston and of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, died early Monday morning, a month after being struck by shrapnel while on patrol in Iraq. His newly commissioned brother, Matt Houghton, and his parents, George and Cindy Houghton, were by his side.

Since the July 10 attack, family and friends have followed with Houghton's struggle for his life in a heart-wrenching, real-time account on the Internet (www.andyhoughton.org). In blog form, they shared details of the ordeal, including Houghton's signs of consciousness, his care and who was at his bedside. They often asked for the prayers of loved ones.

"While Andy was not active during the day, he did eat ice chips, squeeze hands and mouth the word 'Dad,' " reads a July 27 entry. "The low grade fever is back, bouncing between 99 and 100 degrees."

Even in their agonizing weeks-long vigil at their elder son's bedside, the Houghtons celebrated their younger son's graduation with enthusiasm.

"George called from Georgia to report that Matt's OCS graduation dinner and ceremony were impressive," reads a July 29 entry. "Hooah!"

Houghton was the 13th West Pointer and the 18th person from the Houston area to be killed in the Iraq war.

He was the first Strake Jesuit graduate to be killed in the war. Principal Richard Nevle described him Monday as a natural leader, a talented student and a good athlete.

"He had this smile that just exploded whenever you saw him," Nevle said. "Andy was a person who liked to help out and who had an adventuresome spirit. He loved this country."

The family also mentioned, on the blog, "the famous Andy grin."

Houghton commanded a platoon in the 1st Infantry Division. He was on an early-morning patrol near Samarra on July 10 when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle came under rocket-propelled grenade fire, his family said. Houghton suffered major head wounds from shrapnel, losing two quarts of blood.

With no heartbeat or blood pressure, he needed an immediate blood transfusion, the Houghtons were told. The field hospital did not have his blood type on hand, so a direct transfusion was done from a surgical nurse with the same blood type.

The U.S. Army could not confirm details of Houghton's injuries or death because of its policy to give the family 24 hours to grieve before information is released. The Houghtons chose to share details of their son's ordeal.

A week and two surgeries after Houghton's injuries, he was flown to the Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany. George and Cindy Houghton met him there and accompanied him on his July 19 flight to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Last Wednesday, in a bedside ceremony just days before his death, Houghton was awarded a Purple Heart.

The next night, Houghton began having seizures caused by a severe brain hemorrhage.

"The doctors determined that they could not operate due to very high risk as it was very deep in the brain," the Web site said.

The family kept him on a ventilator until Friday afternoon, when his brother, aunt and uncle could arrive in Washington. They expected him to die when the ventilator was removed, but reported that, "fortunately Andy is as strong as a horse, and he is currently managing to breathe on his own."

By Saturday, doctors were trying simply to control Houghton's seizures and minimize his pain.

He died at 1:12 a.m. Monday.

A SOLDIER'S LETTER

Before leading his platoon into battle in Iraq, 1st Lt. Andrew R. Houghton wrote to his family and friends about his February deployment.

An excerpt:

From my own personal point of view, an Army leader can work his whole career and never have such an opportunity to take soldiers like these into combat. I remain humbled and awed at what they do every day that I get to work for them.

Until Later, Andy3
