Biography

Weighed 8 lb 7 oz at birth in Hood River, Oregon. Lived at Taylor Street for a
while, then on Columbia, then on West Prospect at age 5. Slept upstairs where
there was no insulation, with the spiders. Saw FDR as a 1st grader from Oak
Apartments in Hood River. Walked to school - Coe Primary, home at lunch for
1st and 2nd grades, Park Street 3rd thru 6th, had Paula Clark as 6th grade
teacher, 7th - 9th at May St. Jr. High. In 7th grade seating was by test
grades, middle of the class at first, ended in first chair.

Friends growing up were the Barker twins, Bobbie Cramer, Cook brothers (one of
which is now the Trailblazer's team physician). He
was one of the fastest, but small and young. Played in the willows, forts and
trains, played football each Saturday. Home from school listened to radio -
Captain Marvel and Jack Armstrong.

Can remember his father falling from the roof into the ivy and swearing. His dad
did woodworking in basement and worked for PP&L. Bob threw his underpants into Lost
Lake at age 4, and his dad had to dive in for them. Picked cherries for
Grandpa Vaughan at age 7 (2-3 cents/lb), earned about $7.20, his grandpa was
going to give him $0.25 for helping.

Bought fireworks at the Y-Inn, dropped salutes into the river. 10-12 golfed at
course, pulled carts with bicycles. Swam at Koburgs beach pavilion. Track
during sophomore or Junior year, had a bad coach.

Thought brother Bill had bad judgement, and was a knothead.

Moved in 1948 to the farm. Carnival at the swimming pool, wrestling. Baby sat
Martha and Bill. Learned to drive a Model A truck 4 speed jitney. Changed
sprinklers. Dated Liz Cole senior year in high school. Involved in first
commercial uranium mining in Oregon at Lakeview, worked fire trails, did
uranium hunting, worked for his Uncle Bob Vaughan dredging sand on the river
and at the log dump by the interstate toll bridge.

After marriage lived with Grandma Susie, worked for John and at the cannery.
Borrowed money on the Perk Place, shared equipment with John Couch, changed
sprinklers, thinned, cannery, Hickeys Delivery boy, sold fruit trees
(beginning in 1959) and sprinklers (beginning around 1960). Yarded out fruit
in lug boxes and hauled them to town behind a tractor.

Did import/export as a sideline for two years. Was a commercial applicator of
herbicides from 1964 to 1967. Had the first tree hole digger in Hood River (an
auger) and dug holes for 10 cents a hole. Also had the first trencher in the
valley in 1969. Had a landscape contractor business with his brother Bill in
1968 for a short time. Started Hood River Nursery in 1972. First Orchard Weed
Sprayer in the valley. First record of pipe sales in 1960. Did the landscape
and irrigation on the Hood River Sewage Treatment Plant in 1974 at the port of
Hood River. In 1958 bought the Perkins (Perk) place, 1960 the Ruff Place
(peach Orchard was planted here), in 1961 the Wilkins place (where the shop is)
and about 1966 the Marsh place on Brookside Drive. Started Bryant Pipe and
Supply Inc. in 1985.

Bob can do "bird finger" pull-ups.

The boys ran the fruit stand selling peaches, apples, and pickup pears. Steve
began at about age 10, and the others at about age 8. The boys got 10% of
sales as their pay at the stand.

Attended Oregon State University 3-1/2 years in Geology. Owns irrigation and landscaping bus iness, retail nursery, and operated fruit farm.
