Henry J. Houghton, 93, formerly of 11 Foote St., died Tuesday at Cayuga County Nursing Home.

A native of Scipio, Mr. Houghton resided most of his life in the Auburn area. He was employed many years with New York Electric & Gas Co.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; a son, Warren A. of Oklahoma City, Okla; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Langham Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Calvary Presbyterian Church.6

Carleton F. Houghton, 93, of West Genesee Street Road,Auburn,formerly of Scipioville, died Saturday at home.
Born in Scipio, he moved to Auburn in 1984. He was a graduate of Auburn Business School. He was an accountant with Porter Lumber Co. of Auburn and owned and operated a poultry farm in Scipioville for many years. He was a member of Cayuga Masonic Lodge 221 of Scipio, the board of trustees of Evergreen Cemetery, the Aurelius Senior Citizens and the Auburn Getaway Camping Club. He served many years on the Scipio Town Board. His wife, the former, Barbara Steigerwald, died in 1984. Survivors: Three cousins, Beverly M. Schenck of Cayuga and Fred A. Anthony and Richard A. Herbert R. Houghton Jr., 89, died April 12, 2001, at Sonogee Estates Retirement Center in Bar Harbor.

Born in New York City, Herb was the son of the late Herbert R. Houghton and the late Jane Rushmore Houghton of Mamaroneck, N.Y. He graduated from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., and Union Theological Seminary, New York City. He was chaplain of Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., and for the USNR during World War II, serving with Marine Aviation in the South Pacific and China.

Herb was pastor of churches in Deerfield, Mass., Oxford County United Parish, Maine, and Orono from 1946 until 1971.

After hosting the first American Field Service student at Orono, Herb left the ministry to work as assistant to the president of AFS in New York City from 1971 until 1977.

Herb worked numerous jobs after retirement in 1977 until 1990 when he survived a stroke and was cared for at the Sonogee Retirement Care Center in Bar Harbor until he died.

Herb’s work was his life and his life was his work, but he managed to be an accomplished poet, writer, musician, and gardener.

He was the husband of the late Mary Gulnac Houghton and father of the late John Houghton. Survivors include three sons: Dudley Houghton, Hampden, James Houghton, Bar Harbor, and Richardson Houghton, Fort Collins, Colo; five grandchildren; two brothers, Everett T. Houghton, Columbia, S.C., and Rushmore R. Houghton, Chapin, S.C., and families.

Three additional adopted children and many people in need were also family to Herb.

An informal celebration in memory of Herb’s life will be held at the College of the Atlantic, 105 Eden St., Bar Harbor, on Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2001. Family and all friends are invited.

George K. Houghton, 67, Mandy Rue, Skaneateles, a native of Alexandria Bay, died Wednesday at Auburn Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Houghton was a mechanical engineer with General Electric Co., Syracuse, and retired in 1989.

Born Feb. 20, 1929, at Alexandria Bay, son of Edson and Olive Brown Houghton, he was a Navy veteran of World War II had lived in Clyde before moving to Skaneateles in 1959.

He was a member of Skaneateles United Methodist Church, the Skaneateles Ambulance Volunteer Emergency Service and the Antique Boat Association of Alexandria Bay. A former Explorer Scout, he was former scoutmaster of the Clyde Boy Scout Council.

Mr. Houghton was also past master of Clyde Masonic Lodge, a former coach for the Lakeshore Little League, Skaneateles, and a member of the Robert J. Hydon American Legion Post 239, Skaneateles.

Surviving are his wife, the former Bernice "Tiny" Lowe; two sons, George K. Jr., Andover, Md., and Dwayne D., Baldwinsville; two daughters, Deborah A. Sponaugle, Homer, and Tina H. Ward, Skaneateles; five grandchildren, three nephews and a cousin.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Skaneateles United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Skaneateles.

The family will receive callers at the church after the funeral. Arrangements are with Robert Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles.
