“Our Friends”
Jacobs Family Photo Montage (c. 1883-90)

The original matte is 19” x 24” matte and has twelve spaces for oval openings for photographs. It originally contained the photographs of ten persons comprising Joseph Austin and Julia Ann (also written Juliana) Jacobs and their six children and Julia Annís parents, Horace and Philena Houghton. On one of the unused ovals at the bottom of the matte is the notation “Infant Girl,” suggesting a seventh child died at birth; there is no birth date. Julia Annís obituary in the Watertown Daily News (31 Dec 1914) says that she bore eight children. There is no evidence of an eighth child, either in the Carville Cemetery or on the matte, though it is possible the latter has faded.
Around each oval there are eight spaces (four to a side) for personal information. Not all entries were completed; for example, those for Benjamin Eastman Jacobs are all blank, though he was the only child to survive the father by more than a few months. (Austin died a little over seven months after Joseph Austin Jacobs.) Benjamin was also the only child to survive his mother. The lack of information about him is perhaps related to his having left Helena by the time the montage was begun. Where possible, the information has been verified or (if missing) supplied from other sources, e.g., tombstones and newspaper articles. A question mark indicates cases where the information is difficult to discern. The exception is Effieís middle name, where the writing is clear but the orthography seems unusual and is unsupported by other evidence.
In the center of the document are three blocks: one is entitled “Our Jewels,” one “Gone Before,” and a smaller one in the center is headed by two cupids and overlapping hearts. The first records the birth dates of all the children, and the second the deaths of Horace, Roscoe and the two girls. The center block has the date of Joseph Austin and Julia Annís marriage. Below their names one can perceive a faint capital “B” suggesting perhaps that Benjaminís marriage (he was the only child to marry) was also recorded. The paper is stained at this point, an indication perhaps a liquid caused that entry to fade.
Most likely the montage was assembled by one of the Jacobs women, and it seems reasonable to conclude that it was done by the mother, Julia Ann. This is suggested by the inclusion of her parents and the probable date of the last entry, 1890, following the death of Joseph Austin. Perhaps she began to work on it following the death of the eldest son, Horace Watts Jacobs, though it may well have been done later, perhaps following the death of Joseph Austin. The entries all appear to be in the same hand, and the ink and pen for each appear to be similar. No death date is given for Austin, who died July 25, 1890 in Cincinnati, Ohio of tuberculosis. It is easy to imagine that at this point Julia Ann may have lost the will to update the montage. All of those in the montage were interred in Carville Cemetery, except Benjamin who is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Baker City, Oregon.
The montage was in the possession of Mary Baldwin Carroll of Ridgefield, Washington. It had come from her grandmother, Jessie Mabel Jacobs Baldwin, second daughter of Benjamin E. Jacobs, and it was restored and copied by William G. Crowell, grandson of Claudia Hartzell Jacobs, youngest daughter of Benjamin.
Horace Houghton was an early settler of Helena, having arrived there from Windsor, Vermont in 1826. Joseph Austin Jacobs arrived the same year as a fourteen-year old boy accompanying his father, Amaziah Jacobs. Horace and Joseph served as commissioners for St. Lawrence County. All three men are mentioned in Durant and Peirce. History of St. Lawrence County.
The names are listed here in clockwise order as they appear on the matte, beginning with Joseph Austin Jacobs in the upper left hand corner..
