Celebration of 80th Birthday

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Houghton on Drexel Avenue, Detroit, was beautifully decorated in blue and gold in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the birth of their mother, Mrs. A. G. Houghton of Cass City. Mrs. Houghton received many beautiful flowers, basket fruit and many other gifts in honor of the occasion. The evening was spent in music and games and at the close of the evening, Mrs. Clarence Houghton served a very beautiful lunch of two courses, including a large threee-layer birthday cake decorated with eighty candles. When all other lights were turned off, the candles on the cake made a beautiful picture, and especially delighted the grandchildren and great grandchildren present. At Mrs. Houghton's request, the grandchildren blew out the candles.

All five of Mrs. Houghton's children were present including their families. They are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Houghton and son, Merrill, his wife and three children; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Houghton and their three children; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Doyle and daughter, Bernice; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Collins and Mrs. Harriet Dodge. Other relatives present were Mrs. Houghton's sister, Miss Eliza Rock and her niece, Mrs. Blanch Heddon and daughter, Thelma, of Flint. Including the relatives and friends, the guests numbered 40. Mrs. Houghton was, indeed, a very happy and honored guest.8

Mrs. Houghton Died at Age of 82 Years
The gates of heaven opened to usher in one of Cass City's beloved old residents. Alice Marian Houghton, widow of the late A. G. Houghton, passed to her eternal reward in Detroit, at the home of her eldest son, Clarence, at the ripe old age of 82. She was stricken with apoplexy July 3, and all of her children were called and everything was done that loving hands could do, but she departed this life on July 10.
Brief services were held in Detroit. Rev. James W. Chapman, pastor of the Woodmere M. E. church, spoke words of assurance of her beautiful character, and her hope of eternity. He has been her pastor since she went to Detroit four years ago. The remains were brought to Cass City to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Dodge, and on July 12, services were held at 10:30 a. m. at the Methodist church where she has been a member for over 35 years. Rev. I. W. Cargo of Fenton, her former pastor, came to pay his tribute to her beautiful life and sterling qualities. He was assisted by the present pastor, Rev. Geo. Hill, whose son, George Hill, rendered a beautiful tribute in song.
While a resident of Cass City, she was a very prominent and active member of the Milo Warner Post of the ladies of the G. A. R. She leaves to mourn five children: Clarence W., Grace Collins, Harriet Dodge, Edith Mickle, and Roy N; ten grandchildren, Merrill and Earl Houghton, Carl Martin, Marie Bigelow, Bernice Glenn and Dwight Mickle and Jean, Marian, and Donald Houghton; four great-grandchildren, Jean Marie Bigelow; Loraine, Merrill and Gordon Houghton; and one sister, Miss Eliza J. Rock, who resided with her in Detroit.
Those from out of town at the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Houghton, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Houghton, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Collins and son, John, and Mrs. Edith Mickle, all of Detroit, Mrs. Ida Rock of Saginaw and Miss Grace Rock from Port Huron, Mich.

D. M. Houghton

Suffering greatly during his last weeks of illness but being very patient under great affliction, David M. Houghton passed away at his home on Houghton St. Thursday afternoon, July 18, at the age of 72 years. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. D. Young, the pastor officiating.

David M. Houghton was born in the state of Vermont, Oct. 5, 1845. He was the decendant of a sturdy stock of ancestors and was a member of a large family of loyal Americans, having had a father and five brothers serve in the U.S. army in the War of the Rebellion. Mr. Houghton was a member of the 8th Michigan Infantry, Army of the Potomac. He was wounded in the Battle of South Amia River.

On December 1, 1866, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Landon at Caro and they at once made their home in Novesta township where Mr. Houghton had earlier in the year taken up a homestead. Here they met bravely the privations and hard work incident to pioneer life. Later, they moved to Cass City where they made their home for many years, leaving it only for brief periods for residence in Bay City where Mr. Houghton was in business and in Florida. Mr. Houghton served as mail carrier on R. R. No. 5, for eleven years, being among the first carriers appointed at the Cass City post office. He was at one time commander and for some years served Milo Warner Post, G. A. R., as adjutant. He was also a member of the M. E. church and passed away strong in the faith, a resurrection and a future life.

He leaves a wife, one son, Lew Houghton, and one daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Rowley, both of Detroit; four brothers, A. G. Houghton of Cass City, Wm. S. Houghton of Seattle, Wash., and Harvey and Elias Houghton, both of Holly, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Rosetta Bailey and Mrs. Almeda Warner, both of Florida.

Among the relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lew Houghton and Mrs. Henrietta Rowley and daughter, Merle, all of Detroit, and Mr. and Mrs. Hummer Rollison of Ortonville.

In Memory of D. M. Houghton

A grey-haired Christian soldier
Has gone to his long, long rest,
Faithful he was to his Captain
As a sentinel at his post.
He has fought the good fight and conquered
He has gained his just reward.
He sings the glad songs of Heaven,
And kneels at the feet of his Lord.
God calleth His own to His bosom
Tho' it grieves our hearts full sore.
Yet we know he is safe in Heaven
All his trials on earth are o'er.
Dead to the world and its folly,
Lost to its glitter and show,
He walked in the narrow pathway
Of his Master, here below.
Gladly he served the Savior
With a faith that was firm and strong,
Meekly he trod in His footsteps
Now he dwells the saints among.9

Mrs. David M. Houghton

Another early settler in Ellington township is Mrs. David M. Houghton who came to that community with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Landon, at the age of thirteen years. Margaret Landon was born Sept. 19, 1851, in Lansdown, Ont. Three years after her parents settled on a farm in Ellington, she was united in marriage with David M. Houghton. They lived on a farm in Novesta township for a number of years and then moved to Cass City where Mr. Houghton established the first meat market in this village.

Mr. Houghton was a member of the 68th Michigan Volunteers at the age of seventeen and saw active service for two years in the Civil War. He was a charter member of Milo Warner Post, G. A. R., and Mrs. Houghton was a staunch supporter of the ladies' auxiliary. Mr. Houghton passed away July 18, 1917.

Mrs. Houghton has always been an active church worker and was spry in every way until two years ago when she fell down the basement stairs in a local store, breaking an arm and a leg. She was confined to her bed for a year, but has recovered sufficiently to be able to visit her neighbors again and to attend church.7

Chronicle Readers:

There have not been many changes in the DeLong family since migrating from your community. As for the head of the house, he still holds forth at his old trade, building bungalows for the westerners at the same time regaling the passers-by with the same old whistle. Master Nigel would scarcely be recognized as the little lad who left Cass City three years ago, and while not yet 12 years old, he is a big, husky fellow measuring 5 ft. 3 in., and weighing 117 lbs.3
