ResearchLucinda Frank: I have consulted two genealogists about baby Horace B. Houghton being buried in Alexander, Genesee, NY and then bringing his coffin to Harrison Township in Indiana to rebury. Both people said that since Horace was the baby who was named after the senior Horace and was to carry on the line, they left the baby in the Alexander graveyard and that the headstone in Indiana is an empty one to remind the father about his line. I was told that this was done many tines in the past.1

W. S. Houghton Was a Former, Altamont Business Man
Died in Los Angeles, Cal.
Back in the spring of 1883 a young married couple came from Kosciushe county, Indiana, and settled in Altamont. It was Mr. and Mrs. W. S, Houghton. Soon after their arrival in Altamont Mr. Houghton became interested in a drug store that was at that time located on the corner where the Altamont State Bank now stands. It was a frame structure and is now used as a ware room back of the Wilkins morgue. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton and children remained here three - years after which they moved to Cof- feyville where Mr. Houghton engaged in the drug business. They remained at Coffeyville awhile and returned.
After they returned to Altamont Mr. Houghton engaged in the drug business in what is now known as the old Journal building which was destroyed by fire in August 1919. It was in this building Mr. Houghton conducted a successful business and was postmaster of the town from 1893 to 1897. During this period of time Mr. Houghton erected the residence that is now being occupied by Prof. D. L. Katterjohn who is principal of the county high school.
In the year 1900 Mn and Mrs. Houghton and children moved to Cherryvale where they resided until 1911 after which they moved to Los Angeles, Calif, where Mr. Houghton was engaged in the drug business until one year ago when he was compelled to retire on account of poor health.
William Sarber Houghton died at Los Angeles, Calif, on January 18, 1921 at the age of 60 years, 6 months and 9 days. He was buried in the Inglewood cemetery Thursday, January 20. Mr. Houghton realized his physical condition and as far back as one year ago, he informed his family that it would be impossible for one in his condition to live more than twelve months longer. During all the twelve months suffering he was one of patience and bore his afflictions in a most masterly manner.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Minerva A. Houghton he leaves seven children all of whom were able to be at his bedside during a portion of his sickness. The cnildren are Muril, Charles, Grace, Lee, Carl, Maude and Howard. The first mentioned is Mrs. Dott Norfleet. The Norfleet family left Mound Valley more than a year ago and they have since resided at Los Angeles. The remainder of the family has been living in and near Los Angeles.
ParentsSfather born in MA, mother born in IN
BiographySince both parents were gone, this left little William Sarber Houghton at 2 years an orphan. I know that when he wanted to marry Minerva Alice Blue, he was under age and Uncle Ike Bell gave his permission for him to wed since I believe that Minerva was also an orphan, but not under age. He may have been raised by the Bell family since it was Susan's sister, Hattie, who married Ike Bell and they were his uncle and aunt. (Just a side bar, Ike and Hattie were the parents of Lawrence Bell, founder of Bell Aircraft Corp. and creator of X-1, the first supersonic plane.7
