In Carver, Wenesday Evening, Jan 31st of Erysipelas, Capt James Houghton, age 51 years. The deceased was well known as the veteran Steam Boat Captain of the Minnesota River. having commenced in 1855, since which time he has been almost continually upon this river. Most of the time running his boat between Carver & Saint Paul. All remember the favorite little "Antelope" of which Captain James and his brother George were owners, and also the old "Chippewa Falls", and the "Mankato". James Houghton was a man that was universally liked, always good natured,pleasant and accommodating, and we doubt if ever a man died leaving so few enemies, indeed we question if he has one. He was an old settler having come to this state with his brother Capt. Geo. Houghton in the year 1848. He was a native of Vermont, born in 1821, Consequently he was about 51 yrs. old. He leaves a wife and three small children. Carver will miss him. He was one of our best citizens. He was buried on Thursday p.m., and followed to his last resting place by all his old friends and neighbors.5

ResearchKathy Ostvig: Census record indicate an Edward H Houghton living with George and Lydia in 1880 age of 8 years old. with parents born Vermont and Pennsylvania the 1875 census for George & Lydia list an Edward Houghton age 3 parents born Father Vt., Mother Germany.

The birth records at Carver co. Government Building indicate Eddie Holmes Houghton born 8 Feb 1872 as being an Orphan and no Parents listed, James death date is listed as 3 Feb 1872 and Eureka death Date listed as 12 Feb 1872. Obit for James list death date as 31 Jan 1872.

Because of age and records I am inclined to believe that Edward Houghton is the son of James Houghton and Eureka who is listed in the 1865 Census as being born in Prussia. I believe he was adopted by George & Lydia. This fact is beared out in the following.

Records of gaurdianship filed in Carver county confirm the fact that Edward Houghton was James Son and not George's. All four children are listed in the gaurdianship records. Edward stayed with george and Lydia, the others William ,James and Newell went to live with their Uncle Edward Houghton in Harrison Co. Iowa. On FHC FILM #1434904 Item 1 pg 194

Edward Holmes Houghton Son of James Houghton (son of Eli & Deborah (Dwinnell )Houghton)and Eureka((Kahlow?)( see Notes about Eureka ) Census record indicate an Edward H Houghton living with George and Lydia in 1880 age of 8 years old. with parents born Vermont and Pennsylvania the 1875 ensus for George & Lydia list and Edward Houghton age 3 parents born Vt., Germany.

Found at Burial Search www.lakewoodcemetery.com Edward H. Houghton Age 33 death date 12/30/1905 Place of Death NA called said Nicolett Ave. Dispoition Date 1/02/1906 Site ID 90-19-2 not sure if this is Edward Holmes houhgotn or not, he is not buried with the
other houghtons in Lakewood Cemetry. I am ordering Death Certificate

The other sons of James, are William, Newell , and James.

Newell you have correct info on except you have george listed as parents. I can only add the following Nuele is the Spelling of Newels name in the 1870 Census for Carver, Carver, MN This is most likely incorrect as his fathers brother is Newell and he was born shortly after his death Newell and James are found in the 1880 Census living with their Uncle Edward Houghton in Harrison, Cass, Iowa FHL film 1254343 National Archives film T9-0343 Pge 125D

James Death date is 3 of Feb 1872 from court house records...the death date comes from the court house records in Carver, Carver, Minnesota The record states "age at death 51 yrs 6 mo born United States died of Erysipala Township Carver, Occupation Boat" the record was made 31 Dec 1872, the obit indicates a date of 31 of Jan 1872.

In the book "The Carver Story" by Lucie K. Hartley published in 1971 pp. 21 states"Cemetery Records show that James Houghton and his wife are buried in Mt. Hope but there is no marker. Thus one of the most colorful of Characters, closely associated with this romantic aspect of pioneer days, now lies forgotten in an unmarked grave." I believe Mt. Hope Cemetery is in Carver, but I haven't verified this yet.5

BiographyKathy Ostvig: Wisconsin birth of mother goes along with history of the Winnebago, location in Blue Earth goes along with running The Winnebago Agency since most Winnebago were relocated to Blue Earth County from the Long Prairie Reservation after A treaty involving the United States Government And the Winnebago Chiefs occurred on the 27th of February 1855.

The Heritage of Blue Earth County Minnesota on Page 411(McPherson Township T440), by Julie Hilleer Schrader, Says Newell came there when they established the Winnebago Agency in 1855. It states:
"Among those connected with the Indian agency who came with the Winnebago in June 1855, were: General J. E. Fletcher, Indian Agent Henry Foster, Joshua Ady, A. L. Foyles, W. J. Cullen, Superintendent of Indian School, Chas. H. Mix, Asa White, Geo. Culver, Peter Manaige, Newell Houghton and J. L. Alexander."

Mc Pherson Township was located & the Winnebago Agency was located 12 miles from Mankato, in the area where St. Claire, now stands.

Newel was an avid hunter.
From the Mankato Semi-Weekly Record, 6 Dec 1859 records the following:
"Returned---Messrs. Houghton and White, of Winnebago Agency, returned from their hunting excursion to the Upper Mississippi country, on Tuesday last, having killed thirty-two deer, a bear, and a lynx. They report game plenty but very wild."

In the Mankato Semi-Weekly Record, dated 14 Feb. 1860 we find another hunting story:
" Minnesota Hunter. --- Our friend N. Houghton, of Winnebago Agency, started Northward on a hunting expedition last Friday. He is recognized as one of the best shots and most successful hunters in Minnesota, and withal a noble, generous hearted gentleman. So far Mr. H. has killed about two thousand deer, besides countless amounts of other game. His father living in Sherburne County has killed over four thousand deer, and his brother captain of the steamer Antelope, counts his deer scalps by hundreds.

Newel Houghton enlisted in the Army when the Dakota conflict got out of hand in Aug of 1862, he enlisted in Mankato and left immediately for New Ulm.

Private N. E. Houghton inducted into the Minnesota Civil War, with the Mankato Citizen Soldiers Regiment on 19 Aug 1862

His name is also listed in the Minnesota Genealogical Journal: 27, And in a roster compiled by Marion P. Saterlee in 1919, as part of his "Authentic List of Victims of the Indian Massacre and War, 1862-1865." He died 23 Aug 1862 in the Battle of New Ulm. New Ulm, Brown, Minnesota. In "History of Blue Earth County and Biographies of its Leading Citizens" by Thomas Hughes

Under a biography of Charles Bennet, it says...
" Mr. Bennett's identification with the conditions evolved by the Civil war began August 19,1862, when he enlisted in the company of Captain William Bierbauer, under general command of Colonel Charles E. Flaundrau, and was present at the second attack of New Ulm. During the entire day he was in the thick of the fight. On the outside line, and at night, with eight others, he lay under a garden fence as an outside guard. He was an eyewitness to the shooting of Captain Dodd, of St. Peter, on East Main Street, by the Indians Saturday afternoon, and also was in the charge against the Indians along the Bluff about sunset when Newel Houghton, of the Winnebago Agency, was killed." He was buried prior to August 30, 1862, in the Masonic cemetery in Mankato Minnesota. In January of 1863, his body was moved from the Masonic Cemetery site to the Houghton Family cemetery in Big Lake township, Sherburne Co., Minnesota. This information comes from the Mankato Semi-Weekly Record dated 30 Aug 1862 and January 24, 1863.

No better statement of a man could be made than what was reported in the August 30 1862 Mankato Semi-Weekly Record, Under the Heading "A Brave Man Killed".
"Mr. Houghton was a man of undaunting courage, honest, faithful, and a true friend in the fullest sense of the term.--- His powers of endurance were extraordinary, and he was passionately fond of hunting, to which in the past few years he devoted the greater part of his time, spending weeks and months with his faithful dog and unearring rifle far from the abodes of white men.....In his death, we with many others have lost a friend whose place can never be supplied; and in his passing tribute our pen is unable to do justice to his memory. Death has claimed no truer heart than that which animated the bosom of our deceased friend."

From the January 24, 1863 Mankato Semi-Weekly Record No. 59 it states:
"Funeral of Mr. Houghton--- On Saturday evening, the remains of Mr. E.N. Houghton, killed in the battle of New Ulm. Arrived here on Monday afternoon, they left here for Big Lake, Sherburne County, where they are to be interred. They were escorted by six companies of the Seventh regiment, and a large number of citizens."

Winnebago rolls found online has a Mrs. Newell Holton listed in 1913, but upon checking it states Newell Holton est..

ResearchKathy Ostvig: her name was "Rosey (not Nancy a transcription error for the 1860 census, death certificates for the children state Rosy as the mothers name as well as letters written from her to her children; left Minnesota when she went with the Winnebago to So. D. and later NE), a Winnebago Indian ( Har-Zue-Gae-Win-Kaw, or BEE or Bear Woman)"; Little Genealogy gives name as Paula; 1860 census gives Nancy.
After his death, Newels family became divided, His wife and youngest son age 2 were escorted from the Winnebago reservation to South Dakota, they moved one other time with the Omaha tribe until she was finally settled and allotted Land when the Winnebago were given a reservation of their own in Winnebago, Thurston, Nebraska. His oldest three children were raised by Newels Father Eli Houghton and stepmother Margaret in Big Lake Township, along the Mississippi River in Sherburne Co.. The love and respect for Newel is shown in the fact that his brother, and oldest son passed his name down through several generations. It is sad that his death led to the loss of Family ties between a Family.

Notes on Rosey wife of Newell: The Winnebagos were relocated from Praire Du Chien Wisconsin to Long Prairie in 1849.
She is reported by the Family to be the daughter of a Winnebago Chief. This fits well with the dates places and area that Newell is located with the Winnebago people. and the places listed for birth in the 1860 census.
The Name Paula comes from a family. The family had many letters written from her in Nebraska to the family in Minnesota. They have reported to me she was named Paula, but have never seen any letters to verify a name.

Bear [Bee] Woman or Har-zue-gae-win-kaw died in 1890. [On allotment records she was also known as "Newel Holton," probably because they couldn't pronounce her name or that was the nick-name given to her by others.

The Demise of George Houghton Removes Steamboat Captain Well Known in Pioneer Days.

Captain George Houghton, an old steamboat captain, died Thursday at his home, 512 University avenue SE, as the result of a fall in January. He was 74 years old.
Captain Houghton was born near Brandon, Vt., Jan. 8, 1828, and when quite young came to Iowa with his parents by team. In 1848 he moved to Sherburne County, Minn., and took a claim. In 1857, he built the steamers Antelope and Mollie Mohler, which ran between Mankato and St. Paul on the Minnesota River.
In 1870 he built and operated a boat on the Mississippi River from Aitkin to Grand Rapids.
Captain Houghton is survived by a widow and two sons, George N. and Edward H. Houghton.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from Holy Trinity Church. The service will be under the auspices of Cataract lodge, No. 2, A.F. and A. M. The Internment will be at Lakewood.2

BiographyHarrison Co. IA Biographies: "Edward Houghton ranks among the early settlers of Harrison County, having been here two years prior to the organization of the county, the date of his coming being June, 1851...Our subject remained in Minnesota until his coming to this county in 1851. He was united in marriage April 8, 1856, to Mary A. Ellison, a native of Missouri, born August 28, 1838. Their home has been blessed by four children ---Isaac Eli, James C., Mary R. and Nellie. Nellie and James are deceased. Eli is married and lives at Portsmouth, Shelby County, where he is engaged in the grain and agricultural impliment business....The first four years of our subject's residence in Harrison County he lived with his brother-in-law, Samuel Fuller, who came to the county during the month of April, 1851, taking a claim of about seventy acres of timber land on section 17, in what is now known as Six-mile Grove. In October, 1855, these two gentlemen went to Wright County, Minn., Fuller dying in Minnesota in 1876. Mr. Houghton returned to Harrison County, having been absent less than two months, and settled on the site of his present home, which is section 16, of Cass Township, where he purchased one hndred and twenty acres of land to which he has added, until he now has four hundred and eighteen acres. Of this two hundred and thirty-five acres are under the plow, while the remainder is in excellent timber and pasture land...who came to the county...possessing only the magnicient sum of fifty cents...While living with his brother-in-law he managed to get hold of some calves, and to enter a hundred and twenty acres of land, but having to boroow money of Judge Stephen King, with which to purchase a yoke of oxen for a breaking team, with which he broke six acres of his own land, and fifteen of an eighty-acre tract which he and Fuller owned together. After returning from Minnesota, he bought another yoke of oxen and commenced opening up a home in what was then the wilds of Harrison County, which was then within the limits of the "far West." In the spring of 1856, he erected a log house 16x18 feet, under the roof ow which he lived for fourteen years, then built his present commodious farm house, the main part of whic is 16x26 feet, two stories in hdight, togther with an addition 16x36, and one story high. Politically, our subject affiliates with the Republican party, and during his residence in this county has held the offices of member of Board of Supervisors four years, and Township Trustee and School Treasurer for a period of over twenty-five years. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton are professors of religion and believers in the faith and teachings of the Latter Day Saints Chrurch.2
