BiographyAnderson: HENRY HAUGHTON

28 May 1629 (letter of instruction from Massachusetts Bay Company to John Endicott): "And in case Mr. Samuel Sharpe should be sick or absent, the Governor's desire is, that Henry Haughton supply his place herein, and in other occasions there" [MBCR 1:403: Records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, 1628-1686, Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, ed., 5 volumes in 6 (Boston 1853-1854)].
In a letter of 12 April 1631 to Governor John Winthrop, John Endicott stated that "Mr. Skelton, myself and the rest of the congregation desire to be thankful to God and yourself for your benevolence to Mr. Haughton's child" [WP 3:25: Winthrop Papers, 1498-1654, 6 volumes, various editors (Boston 1925-1992)].
COMMENT: Prince reports that "Mr. Houghton a ruling elder of the church of Salem" died during the winter of 1629-30 [Prince 263, 271, citing an unidentified manuscript letter: Thomas Prince, A Chronological History of New England ..., Samuel G. Drake, ed., third edition (Boston 1852)]. No other record has been found of the child mentioned by Endicott.

C. Smith: "The first mention of the name we find in America is in 1629, when Henry Haughton, having arrived by Higginson's fleet, landed at Salem, Mass. He was made a ruling elder in the church and died the same year."

Alexander: On May 28, 1629 Henry Houghton was the first ruling elder of the Church in Salem, MA and died in the winter of 1629-1630, leaving 1 child (see Prince's Annals, pp. 263, 271; Hutchinson's Coll. p. 51): "An in case M. Samuel Sharpe should be sick or absent, the Governor's [John Endicott] desire is that Henry Haughton supply his place herein..."

Pope: He was appointed to supply the place of Mr. Sharpe as ruling elder in case of absence or sickness, in 1629. Died first winter.5,6,7,8,9,10

BiographyAnderson: "William Houghton Origin: Unknown. Migration: 1635 on the Increase (on 15 April 1635, "W[illia]m Houghton," aged 22, butcher, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Increase [Hotten 65]). First Residence: Unknown. Comments: No record for this passenger has been found in New England. Savage believes this immigrant "went in few years to Connecticut" [Savage 2:469]. No one named William Houghton has been found in early Connecticut. Perhaps Savage was thinking of William Holton of Hartford (see sketch of WILLIAM HAULTON . Pope claims that this passenger "William Houghtonettled at Boston. Child Sarah bapt. 6 (2) 1651" [Pope 242]. On 6 April 1651, "Sarah Hawghton, daughter of our sister wife to Willyam Hawghton was baptized" at Boston [BChR 321]. The sixteen-year gap between this baptism and the passenger list makes it highly unlikely that these two records pertain to the same individual."
