JWH: "He was clerk in pension office at time of death, and was pension agent. His wife carries on the pension business at 2618 K. St., Washington, D.C. Edward inherited a sword which was brought over to this country by John the emigrant. This sword, which is known as a 'hanger sword,' being worn more as a part of a gentleman's dress, rather than as a practical weapon. The hilt has upon it the rose of England and the thistle of Scotland, and upon the blade on either side is engraved 'I.N.I.H.I.' It is said that there is a companion sword at Houghton Tower. It is now in possession of his son, Allan Josiah Houghton."⁵

Obituary

Mr. Warren W. Houghton, 84. Resident of Odgensburg,NY for many yaers and a member of the well-known Houghton family, died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Ogden Green at Black Lake on Friday, March 7th, 1919. He was born in Bennington, VT and came to this city as a boy. His father, Joel Houghton , was for many years a well known and prominent resident of Odgensburg, NY and lived to a very old age, dying but a few years ago. He is survived by four sons, J.W. Houghton of Minneapolis,MN, F. W. Houghton of Utica, NY , H.G. Houghton of Milwaukee, WI, and S.F Houghton of California, and Mrs. Henry Normand of Ogdensburg, NY, also one brother, L.Wesley Houghton of Milwaukee, WI, Miss Jennie Houghton who was a sister, died recently.⁶
