Brad Stauf, Wikitree, 2018:
Son of Sam? Or Son of John?
It has been proposed that this Samuel married to Polly Chamberlain was not the son of John "Tertius" Houghton and Susannah Dodge, but that he was the son of a Samuel born about 1759 to John Houghton and his first wife, Mary Goddard. While that may be possible and is being investigated, there are several points that argue against this extra generation of Samuel.

1. The only primary source found so far that explicitly list the father of this Samuel is his 1868 Vermont Vital Records death card lists his father as "John".[15] All others such as the Houghton Genealogy, DAR Lineage etc seem to be unsourced secondary sources.

2. The only birth record for a Samuel Houghton found (by this author) around that date in Leominster, MA is 30 Jul 1761 to Abiather & Millicent Houghton[16] He was actually the second of his name, MA Vital Records lists Saml son of Abiather & Millisent 18 Nov 1751 Leominster, MA along with 10 years later " Saml twin son of Abiather & Millisent b. 30 Jul 1761" also in Leominster with his twin sister Elisabeth. Presumably the first 1751 Samuel had died by 1761.

3. One of the most definitive Houghton genealogies, "Ralph and Jane (Stowe) Houghton of Lancaster, Massachusetts, and some descendants, ca. 1623-ca. 1939 by Marshall L. McClanahan[17] does not list a 1759 Samuel by first wife Mary Goddard but only the 1784 Samuel by second wife Susannah Dodge.

4. The summary of the argument below is this: The Samuel Houghton of Fairley/Fairlee, VT usually proposed as the father of this Samuel of Guilford, VT is NOT in fact his father. This is based on census data analysis falling into 2 parts combined with a Guilford land deed:
4A. The "Elder" Samuel of Fairley appeared on censuses there from 1790-1810 with a gradually growing family. He appears on the 1790 census with 1 male < 16, 1m >16, 3 females and is the only Houghton found in Fairlee. In 1800 he appears with 1m 10-15, 1m 26-44, 2fm < 10, 1fm 26-44 and again is the only Houghton. In 1810 he is the male 45+ meaning he was at least 35 but no more than 44 in 1800 so born between 1756 and 1765[18]. This does not contradict a birth of 1759-1761 in Leominster, Mass or elsewhere.

4B. Samuel (of Guilford) and his brother Eli sold land back to their father John Houghton on 20 Nov 1803[19] in Brattleboro (next to Guilford), at the same time as elder Samuel of Fairley was appearing on censuses 90 miles away. Though the land deeds (4 in total, Deeeds 60, 61, 305 and 416) do not state the relationship explicitly, their purpose was for sons Sam & John Jr. to buy the land from their father John Esquire to provide him with cash, then set up a mortgage for him to pay them back over his lifetime with a provision to pay John Sr.'s wife (Sarah) an annual stipend after John's death i.e. an early reverse mortgage. Eli bought out his brother John Jr.'s interest before, together with Sam, selling the farm back to their father in 1803 for $1,000.

Taken together, these data points are an indicator that we are talking about 2 different Samuels and the Samuel of Fairley was NOT a son of John "Tertius" Houghton of Brattleboro and Guilford.

4C. In the 1830 census in Fairley we see a new "Younger" Samuel Houghton appear and the old one vanishes (he may have died in 1819). Comparing the 1830 censuses of Guilford[20] (where we find the Samuel of this profile) and of Fairley, in Fairley we find only a single Samuel Houghton with only 3 children, all under 10 but this time the oldest male is 30-39 plus a 60-70 year old female).[21]

Based on this, the elder Samuel Houghton of Fairley probably had a son Samuel Jr. who lived in Fairley in 1830 with his (likely) widowed mother at the same time as the Samuel of Guilford (this profil)e lived in Guilford with his family of 11. Granted that this is not "proof" but it is accumulating evidence that the elder Samuel of Fairley and the Samuel of Guilford were not father and son. Instead, the elder Samuel of Fairley had his own son Samuel Jr. of Fairley who, in 1830 lived next to Roswell Houghton b.1784, the proven son of the elder Samuel of Fairley (see #5 below).

5. Samuel (the elder) of Fairley and Samuel of Guilford each had a son Roswell; these Roswells married different women and the life of Roswell of Guilford is shown below in detail. To begin with, Roswell of Fairley appeared on the 1830 census just above his (likely) younger brother Samuel Jr. of Fairley; Roswell already had a large family by that time and was born 14 Sep 1784 to Samuel and Sally Houghton in Norwich, 8 miles from Fairley[22]

5A. Apparently a DAR lineage listing a Samuel Houghton (1759-1819) married in 1784 to Sarah Cooke with a child Roswell (1785-1868, m. 1805 Percy Parker 1786-1865) may actually be discussing the Samuel of Fairley. Further research is needed. Apparently this Samuel enlisted in 1779 and served in Massachusetts and married Sally Cooke Keene in 1784 in New Hampshire (per NH Vital Records). The vital records source for Roswell above show this birth. So it seems more likely that the DAR lineage applies to Samuel of Fairley and mis-stated his wife's name as "Sarah" rather than "Sally", or she went by both.

5B. Regarding Roswell Houghton of Guilford and the Roswell Houghton of the DAR lineage, the Roswell of Guilford, son of this profile was born 28 Jul 1806 Brattleboro, VT of Samuel & Polly[23], married Juliann Fowler 23 Mar 1833 [24] and according to Massachusetts Death Records, died 26 Jul 1887 in Adams, MA;[25] son of Samuel & Mary, a laborer who died of dysentery, place of birth of parents unknown. There are matching census entries for Roswell as follows: -1840 census Guilford, VT (2mi from Brattleboro) likely match age 2 males, 3 fm, R. Haughton -1850 census Adams, MA matches with 8 children plus 3 Fowlers -1855 MA census matches with wife Julia A., 8 children including Amos -1860 Adams, MA census matches -1870 Adams, MA census matches (Rosevell) -1880 Adams, MA census matches, occupation street waterer, mother's birthplace CT, father VT (mother's birthplace was wrong but that is not unusual)

Taken all together, argument #5 shows that there were 2 different Samuel/Roswell father/son combos (Fairley and Guilford), that the DAR lineage in fact refers to the Fairley combo and NOT the Guilford combo and therefore cannot be used as a source for the Guilford branch of the Houghton family.

In summary, there is direct and circumstantial evidence that Samuel of Guilford was the son of John Tertius and there does not seem to be strong evidence that inserts an extra generation of Samuel between those 2, certainly not the Samuel of Fairley.

Wikitree: Brad Stauf research (with me)
Note - Concentrated research was done working with Dr. Charles Vella (Houghton Surname Project) as to whether Samuel Houghton b.1781 was a child of John & Susannah Dodge, or whether he was a child of an earlier Samuel born in 1759 in MA to John Houghton and his first wife Mary Goddard. All evidence indicates that he was the son of John and Susannah Dodge; the 1759 Samuel Houghton (sourced from one of Marshall Loring McLanahan's works on the descendants of John & Ralph the immigrant Houghtons) was actually born in 1755 (the final 5 was smudged and originally was interpreted as a "9"), his lineage was (John, John, Jacob, Benjamin, Abijah), he appeared in Fairley(lee) VT censuses 1790-1810; he died in 1819, estate probated and after that point his widow Sarah aka Sally Cooke appeared on the 1820 census as head of household, in 1830 with son Samuel Jr., in 1840 with son Abiatha L. and died 13 Sep 1848, estate probated 5 Nov 1850 by Abiatha L.

Note 2 - while the Houghton Genealogy by J.W. Houghton (referenced below) is extremely helpful, it contains many errors and omissions and should always be crosschecked with later and well-researched works of Marshall Loring McClanahan (see source list).

Samuel Houghton appears on censuses 1820-1860, a DAR application and within several genealogical studies on the Houghton family. He was born 20 Oct 1781 in Brattleboro, Windham County, Vermont (the VT vital records gives exact age 68 years, 8 months, 28 days at death.) Censuses from 1850 onwards say born about 1784; generally taken in the summer they would only be off by 2 years compared to his vital record entry. His birth state of Vermont is also listed in census entries of some of his children. [11] [3] [4] [12] [5] [6] [9] The "Houghton Genealogy" by John W. Houghton gives a birth date of 15 Oct 1781, also in Brattleboro.

Samuel first appeared as a teenager on the 1800 Brattleboro, VT census in the household of his father: 2 males 16-25 (Eli, Samuel) 1 m 45+ (John Sr) 1 female 10-15 (?) 1 fm 16-25 (Anna) 1 fm 45+ (Sarah Rice)[13]

Samuel married Polly "Mary" Chamberlain about 1801 based on birth of known children; a marriage record has not yet been found. She was buried as Mary Houghton; her son Roswell's VT Vital Records birth record said his mother was Polly and his death record said his mother was Mary but on that death record both parents birthplaces were listed as "Unknown" so the attestor might not have known the family well. Or, Polly just went by Mary sometimes which was not uncommon.

Children of Samuel Houghton Sr. and Polly "Mary" Chamberlain (children 1-3, 5 born in Brattleboro, VT, others in VT but exact location not proven):

Harriett HOUGHTON 1802–1887
David Houghton 1804–1890
Roswell Houghton 1806–1887
Martha Houghton 1808–
Samuel Houghton Jr. 1810–1902
Harvey Houghton 1812–
Benjamin W Houghton 1817–
Helena Houghton 1818–1854
Whitefield Houghton 1819–1830
John Houghton 1821–1830
Gilbert Houghton 1823–1873
Amos Houghton 1826–1827
Ellen A Houghton 1827–
Joseph M Houghton 1830–1903
A variety of sources exist for these children.

Note on "The Houghton Genealogy" by John W. Houghton (sourced below): there is a critical mistake on page 283 of this book. It lists the Samuel Houghton of this profile (person #221 who was married to Polly "Mary" Chamberlain) as HIS OWN FATHER along with a short list of children who actually belong to Samuel Houghton Sr. "of Fairlee". This entry is far out of sequence in the book in the section about descendants of Ralph. It lists his "son" as Samuel Jr., person #1837 but the birth and death and marriage dates are exactly the same as the "father", Samuel #221. It then goes on to list a "son" Roswell (#1838) born 1784 who actually seems to be the Roswell of Fairley (see "Son of Sam" section below) and other children Henry, Elizabeth, Elvira and Biather (Abiatha L of Fairlee), All of whom are correct children of Samuel of Fairlee although his son Samuel Jr. of Fairlee is missing from this list. On the next page, under the listing of "Samuel 1837" which is ACTUALLY SAMUEL #221, it gives the correct(ish) list of the children of Samuel #221 and Polly "Mary" Chamberlain. The end result is an incorrect extra generation of "Samuel Houghton" inserted into this family PLUS a co-mingling of Samuel Sr. of Fairlee and Samuel Sr. of Guilford unless the details are read carefully. Possibly J.W. Houghton meant to include this as an entry for Samuel Sr. of Fairlee who was actually a descendant of John the immigrant, not Ralph the immigrant (see Samuel Houghton Sr. of Fairlee for the DNA proof that immigrants Ralph and John were not "cousins" in any close way).

The 1810 census for this family is still a bit of a mystery; father Johnathan may have been living with one of his older children as might Samuel and others. Their residence in Guilford 1810 is proven by the birth there of son Samuel Jr. in that year but no Samuel Houghton appears on the census. A matching name appears in Brattleboro in 1810 but is missing at least one son and daughter Martha who lived until at least 1870 when she appeared on a census with father Samuel, brother Gilbert and brother Joseph M. & wife Elizabeth in Guilford. The census also lists the oldest male (Samuel) as 16-26 when he would have been 29. So this entry should be treated with suspicion.[14]

Samuel's 1820 census entry lists 4 males < 10, 1m 10-15, 1m 16-25, 1m 26-44; 1 female < 10, 1f 10-15, 1f 16-25, 1f 26-44, 1f 45+, 12 total in Guilford. [2] The female 45+ was likely his disabled sister Anna, she did not appear on the 1820 census with brother Eli.

In 1830 the census shows 2m 5-9, 1m 10-14, 2m 15-19, 1m 20-29, 1m 40-49; 1 fm 10-14, 1 15-19, 1 40-49, 1 50-59 (possibly mother or mother-in-law), 11 total still in Guilford, VT. [10]

The 1840 census shows other Houghtons including "R" likely son Roswell who started appearing in 1840, now 6 total, elderly female no longer with them, indexed as "Jam" Houghton. [1]

The Guilford, VT 1850 census shows names, Samuel b. 1784 VT, children Martha b.1814, Ameliea (possibly Helena?) b. 1817, Gilbert b. 1823, Joseph b. 1831, no wife matching Polly/Mary due to her 1847 death, no remarriage is evident. [3]

Samuel's 1860 census matches known children's names, now with Joseph M. & his wife Elizabeth (b. England) & their children plus Gilbert b. 1828, Martha b. 1818 although birth years for most of the family are wrong. [4]

Samuel died 18 Jul 1868 in Guilford, Windham County, Vermont and is buried in Christ Church Cemetery. Note that a Samuel Houghton (1759-1819) with son Roswell lived in Fairlee/Fairley, VT at the same time as the Guilford family but about 90 miles away in Orange County. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [8]

Son of Sam? Or Son of John?
It has been proposed that this Samuel married to Polly Chamberlain was not the son of John "Tertius" Houghton and Susannah Dodge, but that he was the son of a Samuel born about 1759 to John Houghton and his first wife, Mary Goddard. While that may be possible there are several points that argue against this extra generation of Samuel.

-Followup to original research: see opening paragraph on Samuel "of Fairlee" and his wife Sarah aka Sally Cooke.

In summary, there is direct and circumstantial evidence that Samuel of Guilford was the son of John Tertius and there does not seem to be strong evidence that inserts an extra generation of Samuel between those 2, certainly not the Samuel of Fairley.21

Brad Stauf: Note on "The Houghton Genealogy" by John W. Houghton: there is a critical mistake on page 283 of this book. It lists the Samuel Houghton of this profile (person #221 who was married to Polly "Mary" Chamberlain) as HIS OWN FATHER along with a short list of children which is completely inaccurate. This entry is far out of sequence in the book in the section about descendants of Ralph. It lists his "son" as Samuel Jr., person #1837 but the birth and death and marriage dates are exactly the same as the "father", Samuel #221. It then goes on to list a "son" Roswell (#1838) born 1784 who actually seems to be the Roswell of Fairley (see "Son of Sam" section below) and other children Henry, Elizabeth, Elvira and Biather, none of whom belong to the "real Samuel #221" or his actual son Samuel #1847. On the next page, under the listing of "Samuel 1837" which is ACTUALLY SAMUEL #221, it gives the correct(ish) list of the children of Samuel #221 and Polly "Mary" Chamberlain. The end result is an incorrect extra generation of "Samuel Houghton" inserted into this family unless the details are read carefully.

My theory is that there is a real Samuel Houghton, possibly the one who lived in Fairley, who was the father of a real Samuel Jr. and Roswell but it was NOT SAMUEL #221 who lived in Guilford and had his own Samuel Jr. (#1847) and Roswell (#1845), proven to be different than the Fairley family.

Brad Stauf, Wikitree:
It is important to note that the Houghtons of Fairlee, VT and the Houghtons of Brattleboro/Guilford, VT were different families; those of Fairlee descended from immigrant John and those of Samuel of Guilford descended from the immigrant Ralph Houghton. Both families had a Samuel Sr. with sons Samuel Jr. and Roswell but a study of censuses, marriages and other data makes it clear that these were 2 different families.

Samuel Jr. was born about 1800 in Fairlee (also Fairley), Orance County, Vermont. Although a birth record hasn't been found yet, his age can be determined by census entries beginning in 1810 in that location and from a lack of appearance on his father's 1790[1] and 1800[2] census entries in Fairlee; Samuel was likely born just after that census.

His parents were Samuel Houghton Sr descended from John Houghton the immigrant (John, John, Jacob, Benjamin, Abijah)[3] and Sarah or Sally Cooke of Keene, New Hampshire (She was married as Sally and appeared in many later records as Sarah).

The 1790 census entry lists 1 male < 16 (older brother Roswell), 1 male > 16 (father Samuel Sr), 1 female (mother Sarah/Sally Cooke).

The 1800 census entry lists 1 male 10-15 (Roswell age 15/16), 1 male 26-44 (Samuel Sr. age 44/45), 2 females < 10 (Elizabeth and either another daughter who had died by 1810 or possibly a young relative), 1 female 26-44 (Sally/Sarah Cooke age 35).

Samuel Jr. first likely appears on the 1810 Fairlee census[4] as the under 10 male or the 10-15 male; his older brother Roswell was already married to Percy/Persis Parker by 1806[5] so no longer appears with the family.

Samuel's Siblings
In addition to brother Roswell, Samuel had an older sister Elizabeth born about 1793 appearing on the 1800[2] and 1810[4] census entries. She married Luther Mower in 1816 (marriage record not yet found but she is listed on her children's death records); she appeared beginning on the 1850[6] census in Fairlee with her family, died 7 Sep 1884 in Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vermont[7] and was buried in Fairlee Village Cemetery. At her death she was listed as age 91 years, 7 months and widowed. The death record of her son Lewis L. Mower born about 1823 lists her maiden name as Houghton,[8] confirming the relationship.

Younger brother Abiatha L (Biather in J.W. Houghton) b~ 1803, appeared in 1865 MA census as married but wife does not appear on the census (her name was Sarah T. according to 1897 MA death record of their son Edward C 1838-18 May 1897 [9]. He married 30 Nov 1872 Mary Drake Stratton in Southwick, Hampden, MA; listing Samuel & Sarah Houghton as parents[10] Abiatha d. 3 Oct 1883, buried in Southwick Cemetery in Massachusetts [11] (parental information left blank). This is the Abiatha L. Houghton with whom the widowed Sally/Sarah Cooke Houghton lived on the 1840 Fairlee census[12].

Sister Elvira b. 1 Jun 1805 to Samuel Houghton, Sarah Cook[13] m. ~ 1829 Stephen Fulton based on records of their child James M. b. 1831 VT. Elvira died 10 Jan 1891 in Strafford, VT as Elvira Houghton Fulton.[14]

Brother Henry A. b. 23 Sep 1809, married Adaline P., first known child b~1845 appeared first in 1810 as < 10 years age on the Fairlee census.[4] Henry's death (d. 4 Nov 1886, age 77 yr, 1m, 12 days = birthdate 23 Sep 1809) record in Auburn, NH[15] lists his mother's maiden name as Sarah "Nimms" or similar and says birth place was Keene, NH which matches Sally Cooke's marriage place. However, the only likely Nimms candiate was a Sarah Nims who married Calvin Chapman 1 Jan 1795 in Keene, NH[16]. Sarah & Calvin had a child as late as 1820 (found death record of multiple children), she also appears as Sally in some records so was provably not married to Samuel Houghton Sr. This death record is somewhat of a mystery.

Back to Samuel
On 24 Aug 1819 his father died[17] and on 28 Sep 1819 his estate was probated when widow Sarah and son Samuel Jr. were assigned as administrators of his estate.[18]

Samuel Jr. then likely appeared on the 1820 Fairlee census[19] with widowed mother Sarah who was listed as the householder.

In 1821 he may have been the Samuel Houghton who married Mary Tibbets on 10 Jan 1821 in Wolfeboro Falls (now Wolfsboro), NH.[20] This was about 70 miles from Fairlee and was not anywhere near Keene, NH where his mother originated but no more likely marriage record has been found yet. Later census entries list his wife as Mary from NH, so this is at least a reasonable fit for a marriage.

In 1830 Samuel appears on the Fairlee census[21] with 2 males age 5-9 (William and Henry), 1 male 30-39 (Samuel), 1 female age 5-9 (Paulina b.1824), 1 female 30-39 (Mary) and 1 female 60-69 (widowed mother Sarah).

In 1840 Sarah lived with Samuel Jr.'s brother, Abiatha L. Houghton on the Fairlee census[12] as a woman of that age appears on Abiatha's census. Samuel may have been in the process of moving to Brownville, Jefferson Co, NY where he appeared with his own family on federal and state censuses in 1850-1865. Samuel's 1840 census has not been found yet so his location at this time is uncertain but his brother Roswell appears in Alexandria, Jefferson County, NY indexed as "Russel" or "Resie" "Holon" so Samuel may have been there too (he does not appear on Roswell's census entry, there are no males/females old enough to be Samuel & Mary).[22]

Regarding Sarah, her estate was probated 5 Nov 1850 in Fairlee, VT by son Henry A. Houghton.[23] She may or may not have been the Sarah Houghton, widow of Samuel the Revolutionary War Veteran on 13 Sep 1848 in St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont.[24] A gap of over 2 years to probate a woman's estate is longer than usual but Sarah's daughter Elizabeth Houghton Mower appeared in Lyndon, VT about 9 miles from St. Johnsbury in the 1850 census[6] so Sarah may have been living with her daughter's family.

From 1850 onward Samuel appears in Jefferson County, New York in censuses as did his brother Roswell (see that profile for sourcing). In 1850 [25] he, Mary and daughter Paulina appear in Brownville as they do in 1860 [26] and 1865 [27]

In 1870 he appears in Brownville as a carpenter living with Timothy Shaw and his apparent wife Mary N. Shaw, reporting as born 1797 in Massachusetts so somebody else in the household may have filled out his census.[28] Wife Mary does not appear and presumably had died by this time. Their daughter Paulina had moved to NJ, appeared on the 29 Aug 1870 census in Jersey City living with a "Cook" family of uncertain relation[29] and married James Watson 2 weeks later on 16 Nov 1870;[30] possibly Mary's death was connected to this move. It's also possible that Mary had not died as no record of her past 1865 has been found yet.

In 1880 Samuel is in nearby Ellisburgh, Jefferson County living with son William A. Houghton and his family as an 82-year old widowed carpenter & joiner, now reporting born in VT as were his mother and father.[31]

Samuel's death record or burial has not yet been found nor any record of him past 1880 in NY, NJ, VT or MA.

This death record is somewhat of a mystery; MLM gives this for Henry A. Houghton who married Hellen Smith5

BiographyJWH: "Lived on same farm where his grandfather, John, had lived." [J.W. Houghton gives Samuel, Samuel, John as antecedents.]

Off. Hist. of Gardiner, VT, 1961, p. 468: "While Joseph M. was on his way to Brattleboro on the main highway with his team, he was fired upon by three young men from Greenfield, Mass. A ball passed through his cheek and out at the opposite ear. He was not seriously injured. The men were pursued, tried and served sentences in the state prison at Windsor."

Off. Hist. of Guilford, VT, 1961, p. 284: "The heirs of Samuel quit-claimed the homestead place to Joseph Houghton, one of the sons, in 1874. For many years during the ownerships of Samuel and Joseph Houghton a brick yard was operated in the basin near the present buildings, now used as a calf
pasture. Many of the older residents still remember seeing the old white horse making its endless journey around the mixer. Brick, delivered in Brattleboro, sold for $7.00 a thousand. Much of the brick used in the Brattleboro Retreat was made on this farm. Fire destroyed the buildings in 1897. Then Joseph M. moved to Brattleboro. His son, George E., then purchased the property and erected the present set of buildings in early 1900's."

BiographyMLM: "He attended common schools until age 13; his parents moved to Watertown, NY, 2 years later, about 1833 to Orange Co., and to Alexandria, NY on 400 acre farm on the St. Lawrence River in 1835."; Phyllis Jean Howarth Musscolino: Joseph Houghton received a US land grant and settled at Point Vivian, cleared the land, made a dock and sold wood to the wood burning ships that sailed the waters of the Saint Lawrence River. He mad e a large home. People in those days had very large kitchens. This kitchen was paneled on four sides. The space behind was deep enough for a barrel of grain or a slave who was escaping. Once the y could get to Canada they were free. This was one of the ends of the Underground Railroad. The original house was torched by someone who discovered and resented the escaping.

Luella Mae White Howarth told her son John Houghton Howarth that the Whites and Houghton's, who came to Northern New York State before the War of 1812. There was some skirmishes between some forces , sailing ships, small, but having 3" to 6" diameter cannon balls, the American forces were victorious because they knew the channels in the Thousand Island area, particularly that known as Lake of th e Isles, where there were so many narrow channels that war ships could not navigate and the St. Lawrence river knew well. The Canadian and American people were relatives or friends and went about the re business or farming as though the war was not going on.
So apparently these families were early settlers, it seems as though the government opened new land.
