ObituaryApr 27, 1958Allie (Barth) Houghton, was born 2 March 1867, in Parkville, Platte, MO. Her birth father was James Bascum Rhodus, born on 25 July 1840, in Madison county, KY. Her mother, Georgina Anna Yates, born on 27 December 1848, Louisville, Jefferson, KY. Her parents had married abt. 1867, in Missouri City, MO. They had been blessed with two beautiful children. Their first born, a daughter, Alice "Allie" Rhodus; followed by, her brother, James Bascom Rhodus, born on 10 January 1869, in Parkville, Platte, MO.

Their mother Georgina Anna (Yates) Rhodus, next married, Moritz Barth, of Germany, on 7 Jan 1880, at 1773 Grant Avenue, Denver, Arapahoe, CO. Georgina, aka [Georgia A. Barth], brought with her into this union two children, son, James Bascom Rhodus; and daughter, Allie Rhodus, whom Moritz A. Barth, adopted. These two beautiful children, were raised and loved by Moritz A. Barth; and considered in his heart to be his own.

Allie Rhodus, was legally adopted by Moritz Barth, as his heir at law, by a deed of adoption made and entered into on the 27 day of May, A.D. 1886, which said deed is recorded in book 279, at page 508, of the records of the County of Arapahoe, now the city and county of Denver, State of Colorado.

Allie, graduated at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA. She then became the bride of, Frank Newton Houghton, son of Charles Chandler Houghton and Elvira Lorena (Newton) Houghton. A beautiful wedding was held at the home of the brides parents, Moritz A. & Georgia A. Barth, located at 1773 Grant Avenue Denver, Arapahoe, CO; on the 16 November 1887, attended by family and friends.

Mrs. Frank Newton Houghton, was elected an Annual member of the New England Historical Society on 2 December 1930; and became a Life member on 7 January 1956.

Frank N. & Allie B. Houghton, purchased their residence at 59 South Street, Shrewsbury, Worcester, MA., on January 24, 1921, which said deed is recorded in book 2235, at page 474. After Allie's death, her executor, the (Mechanics Bank in Worcester) sold the property, on September 18, 1958, to Cosmo E. and Elaine F. Mingolla, which said deed is recorded in book 3970, at page 301. On July 7, 1960, the Mingolla's donated the property to a catholic religious order, the Passionate Fathers of Shrewsbury, Inc., which said deed is recorded in book 4121, at page 586. They demolished the house and replaced it with a religious retreat. On May 13, 2009, the Passionate Fathers sold the property to Veterans, Inc., which said deed is recorded in book 44234, at page 105, Worcester Registry, State of Massachusetts.

In correspondence from Allie, she always signed this way: "Your Great Aunt Allie from Golden Hill." Even though their residence no longer exists, one can clearly see; that Golden Hill, really was a hill, just a bit south west of their street residence. Shortly after Allie's death, a neighbor, who was but a mere child at the time, was treated with a tour of the Houghton home. Here are her memories of that day: "I do remember that there were beautiful oriental rugs everywhere. As you entered the house from the back, the foyer was huge and beside the back door was a telephone booth with a full size door. When you went inside, there was a corner bench and a telephone on the wall. Very modern for 1958. I remember that the back of the house had a sun room that went the whole distance of the house, and that it overlooked an English style rose garden. Also, the view from the back of the house was breathtaking. You could see for miles. And yes, back in the day, the whole area was considered Golden Hill."

Sadly, on the 14 December 1917, the birth father of Allie and her brother James would die. James Bascum Rhodus, died in Cypress township, Harrison county, MO; without his two adult children ever knowing his identity. Made evident in deposition transcripts, at the six year litigation of their mothers estate; they knew only his last name, but not his first. They were seeking his true identity at that time. And so their father, James Bascum Rhodus, was buried in Matkins Cemetery, Harrison county, MO.

MRS. ALLIE HOUGHTON,
SHREWSBURY RESIDENT
SHREWSBURY - Mrs. Allie (Barth) Houghton of 59 South St., widow of Frank Houghton, Worcester shoe manufacturer who died in 1931, and after whom Houghton street, Worcester, is named, died Friday in her home.
Born in Parkville, MO., daughter of the late Moritz A. and Georgia A. (Tully) Barth. She lived at 404 Grafton St., Worcester, before moving to Shrewsbury, in 1918.
In December, 1929, she was a plaintiff in a court case in Denver, Colo., contesting the will of her mother in which an estimated $1,000,000 was left to the mother's granddaughter, daughter of Mrs. Houghton's brother. The court ruled against Mrs. Houghton but stipulated that the estate was to be placed in trust with the grandchild. Mrs. Houghton and her brother each received one-third of the income.
She was a member of the Chestnut Street Congregational Church and an honorary member of the Worcester Woman's Club. For many years, she was president of the Club's building committee.
She leaves a brother, Moritz A. Barth, of Miami, Fla.
Private funeral services will be held Monday in her home. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
