BiographyJWH: "At the age of 17 years he went to Cincinnati, Ohio, and entered the employ of R.A. Holden & Co., exporters of ginsing, etc. Late he became a member of the firm. In 1866 he disposed of his interest in the business and went to Baltimore, associating himself with Louis McMurray & Co. (the celebrated sugar corn packer and his wife's brother). At the death of Mr. McMurray he formed the Houghton Packing Company, of which he was president for a number of years. He retired from active business in 1895. He was a member of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and an active worker in the Associate Congregational Church, from which the funeral was held. He was buried in Louden Park Cemetery. The following memorial acrostic was written by his pastor, Dr. Oliver Huckel:
C ome apart and mourn with me,
H e is gone, our faithful friend.
A ll his life was kindly deeds,
R estful be his peaceful end.
L et us praise him. He was true,
E ver working with his might;
S o he labored for his Lord.

E arnest for the truth, the right.

H earty was his word and way,
O pen was his heart and hand;
U seful in his life and day,
G enerous, gracious and grand.
H earts are sad to say farewell
T ears will flow unbidden forth;
O, dear friend, farewell, farewell;
N ow we see thy heart's true worth.

He was greatly interested in this genealogical work, and spent considerable time searching the records of the towns in Massachusetts in which the members of the Houghton family were among the early settlers, and rendered the editor invaluable assistance."

See Biog. Cycl. of Maryland and Dist. of Columbia, 1879:

Houghton, Charles E., Merchant, was born in Harvard, Massachusetts, August 24, 1827, and was the only son of Steadman and Ann (Cragin) Houghton. He attended the public schools of the place, and for some time enjoyed the advantages of the High School; but at the age of seventeen he put into execution a plan he had cheerished from childhood, and sought his fortunes in the West. He went as far as Cincinnati, where he found employment in a provision store, and after serving some time as clerk was taken into partnership. This partnership was dissolved in 1865, twenty-one years from the time he first entered the store. Mr. Houghton then removed to Baltimore, and formed a partnership in the fruit-canning business, which continued twelve years. In 1877 he withdrew from that business, and established himself in partnership with Mr. Geiss, at No. 23 Spear's Wharf, in the merchandise of plaster, fertilizers, and building material. He soon bought out his partner, and conducted the business alone successfully for several years. Mr. Houghton is an active and enterprising man, of high character, a member of the Congregational Church, and of independent views in politics. He married in 1858, Miss Caroline S. McMurray, and has four children.8,4

AlertDeath Date: a letter written to Charles from James in his own hand dated March 10, 1858. The letter speaks of the death of Anna Elizabeth and the baby. Therefore, James was alive and well after the death of both his young wife and baby. I'm not sure, but I believe that Anna (who died 8 days after giving birth) died due to childbirth complications. Also, in the letter James refers to the baby as "Little Anna Janette". Thus the spelling discrepancy. There is also a reference in the letter confirming him as the child's father.
