Nora Springs
Jessie Krause Hughes, 91, of 116 Second St., N.E., died Wednesday (May 17, 1995) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Nora Springs Christian Church, 102 North Hawkeye, with the Rev. David Jones and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
Jessie Hughes was born Jan 5, 1904, near Portland, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Freese) Krause. She married Hugh Hughes in Albert Lea, Minn.
Jessie attended country schools near Portland and graduated from Mason City High School in 1922. She attended Morningside College, in Sioux City and then was a school teacher for many years at country schools around Portland.
She and her husband then farmed in Bremer County for two years and then farmed in Cerro Gordo and Floyd County until 1966 when they retired and moved into Nora Springs.
Jessie loved flowers, collecting dishes and spending time with children. She was a past member of the E.U.B. church in Nora Springs and was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Hughes, Nora Springs; one son, Dr. Frank Hughes and his wife, Cheryll, Storm Lake; three grandchildren, Helen Lamote and her husband, Bob Springfield, Minn., Thomas Hughes and his wife, Rosemary, Milwaukee, Wis., and Kathy Custer and her husband, Todd, Garrett, Ind; four great-grandchildren, Jason and Eric Lamote, Springfield, Minn; and Amanda and Rachael Hughes, Milwaukee, Wis; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one duather, helen Marie Hughes; two brothers: Franklin and Elmer Krause; and three sisters: Aurelia Jensen, Bernice McArthur and Marie Mendelson.

Les H. Houghton, 73, of Farmington passed into eternity on Thursday, July 16, 2015, in Farmington. He was born April 21, 1942, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Howard and Hulene Houghton. Les married Karen Western, his childhood neighbor, on Aug. 28, 1965. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Karen; sons, Scott (Terri) of Seattle, Wash., and their children, Alexis, Sydney, and Cameron, and Chad (Landa) of Farmington, and their children, Matthew, Elizabeth, and Alyssa; brother, Larry of Cookston, Okla., and various nieces and nephews. Les was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Ron of Crawford, Colo. Les graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1968 from Colorado State University. He was employed by General Electric and BHP for many years, retiring in 2002. Les was the treasurer for the San Juan County Science Fair for 20 years. He was involved in the Boy Scouts, participating in Wood Badge and leading Explorer Post 321 for a number of years. For his contribution to youth, Les was awarded the St. George Emblem from the Catholic Church. Les and Karen spent 10 summers at Belfair State Park, Wash., as campground hosts, as well as many treasured RV trips with their children, grandchildren and the numerous friends they made throughout the years. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22 with the Rev. Father Thomas Maikowski as celebrant. Internment will take place at St. Mary's Resurrection Columbarium. Memorial contributions can be made to San Juan Regional Science Fair (P.O. Box 341, Farmington, NM 87499, 505-716-5132, http://www.sjrsef.org).²

Employed as a teacher for 46 years, Iowa Training School for Boys in Eldora, Des Moines, Marshalltown high school, then Green Mountain IA grade schools. DAR member (ancestors in Seth Boynton Houghton and John Haas II). She was active in the Central Christian Church. She was a member of the Iowa State Education Association, American Association of University Women, Marshall County Historical Society, and Women's Christian Temperance Union. Purchased home with parents at 207 N. Fourth St. Liked to travel and collect dolls. Remained single. Lived at Marshalltown, with mother (207 N. Fourth St.) from 1916 to her death.⁹

Biography

She moved with her family to MN in 1922, living in Clayton Twp before moving to Adams in 1960. Graduated from Adams high school in 1936, from Comptometer School in Des Moines, IA and worked for Standard Oil in Mason City IA and in Denver CO. Lived with parents and sister Lillie at Adams, MN in 1958 after surgery for a brain tumor. Died unmarried.
For many years she cared for her parents and sister, and was a member of the Little Cedar Church. She donated her body to the Mayo Medical Foundation.
