ObituaryJun 24, 1990Donald B. Houghton, 72, former director of the Computer Center at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, died June 13 at his home in St. Davids.

Mr. Houghton was born in Washington and grew up in Mountain Lakes, N.J. He graduated from Morristown High School and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., before receiving a master's degree from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Houghton worked at the Franklin Institute from 1946 to 1960.

In 1960, he joined the Westinghouse Electric Co. When he left in 1972, he was vice president of the Westinghouse Telecomputer Systems Corp.

From 1972 until the mid-1980s, Mr. Houghton was a computer consultant.

He taught mathematics at Washington and Lee University, the University of Michigan and Princeton University. He also conducted training seminars in computers at the Franklin Institute, the Drexel Institute of Technology and the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Houghton lectured on computers for many businesses from the mid-1950s through the 1970s. He was a consultant to the Air Force and a member of the Governor's Technical Advisory Committee on Data Processing Evaluation for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

He received many science honors and awards and was listed in the National Register of Scientific and Engineering Personnel, Who's Who in Engineeering, American Men of Science and Who's Who in the East, among others. His many professional memberships included the Mathematical Association of America, the Scientific Research Society of America and the Society for Industrial and

Applied Mathematics.

Computers played an important part of his private life, too. When he became ill two years ago, his family gave him a computer to use at home. Within a year, he founded the Main Line Macintosh Computer Users Group for people who shared his passion. About 25 members regularly meet to talk about new programs and new ways of using the Macintosh.

Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edythe Thomson Houghton; two sons, Neil and Bruce T; a daughter, Anita Graybill; two sisters, Marjorie Thielemann and Lucy Waddle; one brother, Carlos Houghton, and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at St. Davids Episcopal Church. Interment was private.

In his memory, contributions may be made to the Hospice Program, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Bryn Mawr, Pa. 19010, or to the Main Line Macintosh Computer Users in care of Craig A. Tenbroeck, 570 Barton Lane, Strafford, Pa. 19087.
