BiographyJWH: "He was the founder of Houghton Seminary at Houghton, New York, was a successful farmer until middle life. He took a deep interest in church and Sunday schoo work from his early manhood. He was a great reader and devoted much time to study while yet on the farm. He was very strict about the observance of the Sabbath in his family and with hired help, but used persuasive methods rather than by word of command in enforcing his ideas. In 1876 he left the farm, built a home in the village of Houghton and from that time on his life was devoted to Christian work almost exclusively. He took a leading part in erecting the church building at Houghton, which was finished and dedicated in 1877. In 1883 he took up the work of founding Houghton Seminary, and in September of that year the school was opened in a building that cost about $20,000. He gave much time and money to this school, in building it up and helping to shape its policy as an educational institution. The campus is a part of the old Houghton homestead. He put a good deal of money into helping students who were unable to pay all their way in securing n education, and it was one of the greatest delights of his life (as often expressed to the writer) to be able to help these worthy students, and he told the writer a short time before his death, that he could name twenty-six men, who were then preaching the gospel, that he had been privileged to help in a financial way while preparing for this work. He was not an ordained minister until late in life, though his associates often urged him to accept this honor, but for a long time he declined it, thinking that he could do better work as a lay-preacher. He was very fond of children and young people, and did a great work in the Wesleyan Church, and in other churches in Western New York, and for many years was known as the Sunday school man of Houghton, N.Y. In the later years of his life he was ordained as a Wesleyan methodist preacher and did much work in reviving and helpng many weak churches in many parts of the country. The writer often heard him say that he would like to have the Lord use him in his work as long as he could be helpful and would then like to have Him take him home to Heaven without a long period of sickness, and in the last year of his life he put in over forty weeks in revival work, in several different churches, came home on Friday, preached the funeral semon of an old friend on Saturday, spoke three times in the home church on Sunday, in Church, in Sunday school, and in the Young People's Meeting, then went home and retired at the usual time, and before the next morning had a stroke of apoplexy and died, never regaining consciousness enough to speak a word. At his funeral all the schools and business houses of the place were closed, and thus his life went out just as he had wished that it might."

Houghton Seminary was originally a grade school. It eventually grew into Houghton Academy (private co-educational day and boarding school for grades 6 to 12) and Houghton College. In 1996 Hougton Seminary was Houghton College, a Christian college.

Genessee Co. NY Hx: Houghton College is situated in Houghton, Genesee Co., NY, founded in 1883 as Houghton Seminary by Western Methodist Church through the efforts of Rev. Willard J. Houghton for Christian education. The College was charted Apr. 1923. First graduate June 1925.

The Genessee: No liquor, beer, or cigarettes was sold at Houghton College, which overlooks the Genessee Valley. There was no cinema or dance hall. Founded in 1833. Willard Houghton, a farmer, son of VT pioneer, moved into the Genessee Valley in the second decade of the 19th century. He organized Sunday schools. A leader of Wesleyan Methodist Church suggested to Willard the need for the school. "Old Sem" was its nickname. The second graduate James Seymour Luckey became president and built it into college.

Website:
Over a century ago Wesleyan Methodist evangelist Willard J. Houghton traveled the Genesee valley by horse and buggy, tirelessly inviting children to Sunday school. In 1882 his conversations with area church leaders turned a love for young people into a vision for a school—a school that would serve as a “moral lighthouse” for a “dark world.” Soon ground was broken, and in one year Houghton Wesleyan Methodist Seminary opened the doors of a handsome brick building in northern Allegany County and began its educational ministry. Committed from the beginning to a distinctively Christ-centered approach to schooling, the institution has ever remained faithful to its roots.

In the 1890s, as enrollment grew, the Seminary began offering post-secondary courses, resulting in the founding of Houghton College. For years thereafter the Seminary and College continued to share administration, faculty, students, and campus facilities, even after the College received a separate charter in 1923.

In 1955 the Seminary’s administration separated from that of the College, and the Seminary was renamed Houghton Academy. Three years later the Academy began building on its present 25-acre campus and has since erected an administration and classroom building; renovated a girls’ dormitory; built a gymnasium, boys’ dormitory, and girls’ dormitory; and provided its students with an athletic field. In 1995 major new construction was undertaken, resulting in additional offices, classrooms, computer lab, science lab, art studio, and a three hundred-seat auditorium/theater.

Philip G. Stockin (’63) began his work with the school in 1971 and has served as Headmaster since 1983. Under his leadership, the institution has advanced both its boarding and day programs, extending the impact of its distinctive philosophy across the counties of western New York and around the world. Houghton Academy is fully accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Association of Christian Schools International .

In 1999 the Academy established an elementary school on a new campus 14 miles south of Houghton and began offering a complete K-12 program of Christian schooling.

Allegheny Co. & its people: HOUGHTON SEMINARY.—In October, 1882, Rev. D. S. Kinney, one of the leading preachers of the Wesleyan Methodists, and the manager of their publishing association at Syracuse, said to Willard J. Houghton, " We as a denomination very much need a school in Western New York." Thoroughly imbued with the truth of the statement, and determined to be first in the field, Mr. Houghton and others set actively at work, and by February, 1883, had so far succeeded in obtaining subscriptions in aid of the enterprise as to warrant the presentation of a petition for incorporation. In April articles of incorporation were obtained. The charter members were Rev. W. J. Houghton, Rev. D. W. Ball. Rev. H. F. Bruce, Rev. Reuben F. Dutcher,
Rev. John C. Benton. Rev. Geo. W. Sibley, F. M. Mushier. Rev. Benj. S. Loughlin, W. Dougherty, B. A.Hammond, Edward R. Weaver, and Alonzo
Thayer. Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Tucker donated the grounds covering 11 acres, and work was commenced before April. 1883, had passed. The building was
erected, partially finished, and the school opened in the fall of 1884. Rev. W. H. Kenedy, the first principal, remained two years and was succeeded by
Rev. A. R. Dodd, for six years. Rev. E. W. Bruce then was principal for one year. Since Jan. 1. 1894. James T. Luckey has been the principal. Rev.
W. J. Houghton was the sole agent for six years. In 1890 he collected the necessary funds, and founded the theological department, calling it the
"Bible Training Class.'' Rev. B. S. Loughlin, the pastor of the Houghton church, was the first teacher in this department; Rev. J. L. Benton taught
for three years, and now Rev. B. S. Loughlin is again at the head. Students attend the school from states east and west, and quite a number of graduates from the Bible Training Class are now actively engaged in preaching in different states.13,14,15
