She worked for Milford George for a year or so then went to work at Barnes Hospital in the lab. She left there and went to S. Lukes where she became head of routine chemistry labs. She retired from there. Ellabeth never married.

Milford J. Houghton, 72, Lawrence, died Thursday, March 25, 1993, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. The body was cremated, and no services are planned. Mr. Houghton was born June 20, 1920, in St. Louis, the son of Milford George and Louise Ferguson Houghton. He grew up in St. Louis and graduated from high school there. He married Elizabeth Ellinor Kemp on June 5, 1941, in St. Louis. She survives of the home in Lawrence. He moved to Kansas City in 1958, then to Spring Hill in 1970 and to Lawrence in 1977. He was president of Koch Refrigerators in Kansas City for five years before retiring in 1973. Mr. Houghton served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. Other survivors include two sons, Jim, Edgerton, and John, Plano, Tex; a brother, Clark, Osage Beach, Mo; and five grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimers Disease Center at the Kansas University Medical Center, in care of Rumsey Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements.

Biography

Milford Jerome Houghton was my grandfather (6/22/1920 – 3/25/1993). He went by the nickname “Bud” through most of his life. In high school, he worked stocking shelves during the week and Saturdays. He delivered groceries, and in the summer, worked for the owner who also built houses. He became foreman of the concrete gang and as it was a non-union contractor he was also the night watchman on the job. He later had a newspaper delivery area with about 15 kids working for him. Bud went to college one year and then got married to my grandmother, Elizabeth Kemp.
He was a marine in WW2 and served in the Pacific. He saw a lot of action there, but I was never able to get him to share stories about the war. I think he just wanted to forget it. After returning from the war he needed a job to support his family, so he went to American Car Foundry and stood at the gate to the parking lot. When the boss came and they opened the gate he ran through, went up to the car, and asked for a job which he got. The job was shoveling sand into the molds they use to make castings. He then went to work at the small arms factory in S. Louis where his tool and die ability started to shine. From St. Louis he went to Kansas City. He worked for Pratt & Whitney an air plane engine manufacturer. He ended his career as president of Koch Refrigerators.

She grew up in Kansas City, Mo., and received two degrees from the University of Missouri.

She moved to Lawrence in 1977. She was active in Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Order of Eastern Star.

She married Milford J. Houghton on June 5, 1941, in St. Louis. He died in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Jim, Edgerton, and Jon, Leawood; a brother, Thomas Kemp, Prairie Village; and five grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Disease Center at the Kansas University Medical Center. Memorials may be sent in care of Rumsey Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements.

Milford Jerome Houghton had two sons. James Stephen Houghton (2/10/1942) and Jon David Houghton (5/12/56). James is my father. He married my mom Lucindy Ramsay (no middle name although some legal documents have her as Lu Cindy Houghton) on 5/1/1965. I was born 6/4/1970 (David Carlyle) and my sister (Deborah Renee) was born 5/22/1973. Debi married Jason Tate Jaeger on 7/29/1995. Trisha Joan Daniels and I married on 12/13/1997. We have three children. Elizabeth Joan (4/12/2002), Markus James (3/31/2004), and Daniel Christopher (7/22/2007). James Houghton taught junior high English and History for a number of years and later became an assistant principal in the Olathe, KS school district. Today, he is in charge of operations for the district. Cindy has taught 2nd grade in Olathe for most of her career. They both graduated from Baker University in Baldwin, KS.Jon Houghton graduated from the University of Kansas and is a businessman. He married Robin Wolkeyon 10/26/1984. They have three living children Danielle Shea (9/18/86), Jordan Lee (8/30/89), and Garrett Michael (3/8/92). They had a son that died at birth. I don’t know his name or date of birth/death.
