NoteJun 19, 2005A plaque at Liverpool Anglican Catheral, in Liverpool England, was unveiled commemorating 12 American Civil War Soldier's graves (all English Liverpool men), donated by American Civil War Round Table. One of the graves is that of George Houghton, of Liverpool, England, who served in C.S.S. Alabama and C.S.S. Shenandoah. These ships were purchased and outfitted in England for the Confederate Army, particularly in Liverpool, with local crews. The Alabama was launced 15 May 1862 at Laird & Sons, Birkenhead, across the Mersey from Liverpool. Sir Henry de Hoghton, 9th Bt. and his third wife, Ellen Anne Harvey were connected with this ship. The current Bt., Sir Bernard notes that the Alabama's War pennant was made, given and signed by Lady de Hoghton and is now in Montgomery, Alabama. Sir Henry also invested in 300,000 pounds in Confederate 7% Gold Cotton Bonds.
George Houghton's other ship, CSS Sheandoah, was iron-hulled, built by Stephan and Sons, Govan, Scotland, in 1863 and purchased in London, Sep. 1864. She was commissioned off Madeirs. She circumnavigated the world before surrendering to the British Government, 6 Nov. 1865.1
