Pebble Beach - Harold Hart Houghton, 83, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2011. He was born April 14, 1928 in Niles, California to Harold Houghton of New York and Christina Stark Houghton of Glasgow, Scotland. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Bette Wilke.
Harry was born and raised in Niles. He attended Niles High School where he was class president and valedictorian. He attended San Jose State and Stanford University, majoring in aviation. He was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He served six years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Texas and Florida.
He was a building contractor for 36 years on the Monterey Peninsula, building most of his homes in Pebble Beach. He apprenticed for Comstock Associates prior to starting his own business.
He served on the Pacific Grove School Board for ten years and on the Board of Directors at Monterey Peninsula Country Club as board president where he was a member for 57 years. He was also a volunteer for 30 years in the Crosby/AT&T golf tournaments held locally.
He enjoyed being with family, playing golf with his friends and traveling in his motor home and abroad. One of his last comments was "If I had the chance I wouldn't change anything about my life."
Harry was married for 60 years to his wife, Jane, whom he met as a college freshman at San Jose State. He is survived by his daughters, Jill Fanucci (David) and Anne Olson (Jon); and son, John Houghton; grandchildren, Jens Olson, Alicia Zamora, Ryan Houghton, Stephanie Houghton and great grandson, Colton Johnson. Private services have been held. The family suggest that any memorial contributions in honor of Harry be sent to the Gateway Center, 850 Congress Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA 93950.
