ObituaryBAR HARBOR

Herbert R. Houghton Jr., 89, died April 12, 2001, at Sonogee Estates Retirement Center in Bar Harbor.

Born in New York City, Herb was the son of the late Herbert R. Houghton and the late Jane Rushmore Houghton of Mamaroneck, N.Y. He graduated from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., and Union Theological Seminary, New York City. He was chaplain of Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., and for the USNR during World War II, serving with Marine Aviation in the South Pacific and China.

Herb was pastor of churches in Deerfield, Mass., Oxford County United Parish, Maine, and Orono from 1946 until 1971.

After hosting the first American Field Service student at Orono, Herb left the ministry to work as assistant to the president of AFS in New York City from 1971 until 1977.

Herb worked numerous jobs after retirement in 1977 until 1990 when he survived a stroke and was cared for at the Sonogee Retirement Care Center in Bar Harbor until he died.

Herb’s work was his life and his life was his work, but he managed to be an accomplished poet, writer, musician, and gardener.

He was the husband of the late Mary Gulnac Houghton and father of the late John Houghton. Survivors include three sons: Dudley Houghton, Hampden, James Houghton, Bar Harbor, and Richardson Houghton, Fort Collins, Colo; five grandchildren; two brothers, Everett T. Houghton, Columbia, S.C., and Rushmore R. Houghton, Chapin, S.C., and families.

Three additional adopted children and many people in need were also family to Herb.

An informal celebration in memory of Herb’s life will be held at the College of the Atlantic, 105 Eden St., Bar Harbor, on Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2001. Family and all friends are invited.

Contributions may be made to AFS International/Intercultural Programs, 313 East 43rd St., New York City, N.Y. 10017, in memory of Herbert R. Houghton Jr.
