BRIDGEWATER - Ruth Houghton Needham, 84, died Nov. 27, 2011, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born in Bridgewater Corners Feb. 15, 1927, the daughter of Karl and Jean Houghton.

In 1949, she married Stillman Needham. Mr. Needham died in 1996.

Mrs. Needham worked for many years at the Bridgewater woolen mill. After she closed her beauty shop in 1985, she was employed at the Woodstock Inn gift shop.

She was active in Bridgewater Congregational Church and a member of Bridgewater Historical Society and the King's Daughters. She was awarded the 2005 Governors Award for Outstanding Volunteer Community Service while helping moms with their new babies at Good Beginnings.

She enjoyed knitting, bird watching and was theater enthusiast. She also wrote an autobiography, "From the Upper Road."

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Needham, Belinda Shropshire, both of Quechee, and Beryl Needham of Ann Arbor, Mich; five granddaughters and a grandson; and her twin brother, Royal Houghton of Ascutney.

Mrs. Needham was also predeceased by an infant daughter in 1959.

The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Bridgewater Congregational Church.

Ralph W. Houghton, 91, of 4 Foote St. died Wednesday at Auburn Memorial Hospital.

A native of Scipioville, Mr. Houghton lived in Auburn since 1921. He retired from BoMer Plastics in Auburn and previously was employed 30 years with Edmonds Florist in Auburn. Mr. Houghton was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three daughters, E. Alice O'Grady and Janet Sommerville, both of Auburn, and Dorothy Rugar of Geneva; a son, Donald W. of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Langham Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Scipioville.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, 91 E. Genesee St.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. MARIA HAUGHTON
Mrs. Maria Sarver Haughton, pioneer resident and widow of Aaroa Haughton, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edith Higgenbottom, in Sheffield, Ia., on Friday. Mrs. Haughton was born in Pennsylvania, May 1, 3 841. She came to Pecatonica when she was nine years old and has lived here since. Beside the daughter mentioned, she leaves four other children, Mrs. Altha Hawarth, Pecatonica; Mrs. Ettie Higgenbottom, Rockford; Mrs. Ldia Amundson, Durand, and Louis Haughton of Pecatonica. She is also survived by two sisters Mrs. Rebeca Hamilton, Pipestone, Minn., and Mrs. Mary Smith of Omaha, NE.
