BiographyDerl Houghton:
*Elmer Mc Michael was a Corporal in Company B, 4th Regiment, Iowa National Guard, Perry ,Iowa. On May 25, 1898, his Company was called to active duty because of the Spanish-American War. It was mustered into Federal Service as Company B, 52nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry. While at Camp George H Thomas, Lytle, Georgia, many members of the Regiment, including Elmer, were stricken with dysentery. A number of the men died from the disease. Transferred to Camp Chickamauga, Elmer again had dysentery, this time a "near fatal" occurrence. The Regiment was returned to Iowa and mustered out of Federal Service on October 30, 1898, due to the end of the war Elmer got a job as a policeman in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was a motorcycle Patrolman. On Jul 20 1918, he was struck by a car in an intersection while on his motorcycle. His right leg was crushed form the knee down, and both ankles were broken. He recovered, but was released from the police force because of his disability. He walked with a limp for the rest of his life. In 1924, his health began to deteriorate, and he applied for a partial Veterans Administration pension. He was granted a 20% disability due to the effects of the dysentery, and in 1938 he was granted a 100% VA disability pension. In spite of his disability, Elmer served as City Constable in Perry, Iowa, for a number of years in the 1940s and early 1950s. Elmer's right leg was amputated in December, 1954, due to gangrene caused by poor circulation due to the motorcycle injury and diabetes. He died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 11, 1957. Cause of death was bladder cancer and diabetes.
*1898,Served in the Spanish-American War as Corporal, Co B, 52nd Iowa Vol. Infantry.
