Howard William Houghton, 83. of 49 Angefi St., North Adams, died this morining at Berkshire Medical Center Pittsfield, where he was admitted Monday. He had previously been a patient at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams, Jan. 22, 1900, he was a son of Amos and Frances (Matthews) Houghton. He attended schools in the town. After the family moved to North Adams, he was Sraduated from the former St. oseph's High School. He worked for many years as a bus driver with the Berkshire Street Railway. After he retired in 1965 until 1972, he drove school bus for J.T. Bus Co. Mr. Houghton was a communicant of Notre Dame Church, North Adams. He was an honorary member of the Greylock Community Club. His wife, the former Agnes Bouchard, whom he married June 14, 1922, died July 20, 1964. He leaves a son, William H. Houghton of North Adams; two grandsons, Stephen Houghton of Greenfield and Dana Houghton of North Adams; four granddaughters. Mrs. John (Susan) Boucher of Clarksburg, Mrs. Kurt (Nancy) Bolslolie of Easthampton, Mrs. John (Kathleen) Troop of Pittsfield and . Christine Houghton of North Adams; seven great. grandchildren; nieces; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. Services are Monday at 8: 15 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, North Adams. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. In Notre Dame Church, North Adams. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. North Adams. Calling hours for relatives only are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.

Research

John Chandler: The trail from my end starts with a Grace W. Dunton who died at Holden, Mass on 1982 May 24 and was born in Mass. on 1895 Nov 8 according to the Mass death index, but was born 1895 Oct 8 according to the SSDI. As it happens, she was the widow of a New Hampshirite named Perley Dunton who had remained single until after the 1940 census, and they were both buried in Swanzey, NH, with a shared gravestone. The question is: do these two trails connect in the middle? If Grace Houghton married between 1920 and 1930, it wasn't to Perley Dunton, but that first husband might have died any time leaving her free to marry a second time. In any case, if you can confirm or refute the hypothesis that the two Graces are the same, I'd be grateful for that information, and, if you can't, then you may want to make a note that it's an open question. The submitter of the gravestone photo on findagrave has connected Perley Dunton to his kin, but has nothing beyond the 1895-1982 inscription for his widow.
