ResearchMarshall Loring McClanahan's "work in progress" found in libraries all over U.S. and considered the Authority of McClanahan genealogy........by Patije Mills

It is often brought to my attention that Marshall Loring McCLANAHAN's work has been used exclusively for research of the McCLANAHAN families. If you will spend a few minutes with me, perhaps I can point out some of the problems with these sources and help clear up a lot of misinformation which is circulating "out there" -- and is perpetuated-- even after we have proven it wrong. The Book: THOMAS MCCLANAHAN AND DOROTHY MOONEY AND SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS by Marshall Loring McCLANAHAN (MLM) has NEVER been finished. Marshall worked long and hard for more than 40 years to find all the facts which had McCLANAHAN included in them. He died in his 90's! disappointed that his work-in-progress was never completed. He left some of his notes and correspondence with a McCLANAHAN cousin and asked that it be corrected, completed, and published. (Some of us are working on doing just that.) In the meantime, it MUST be considered a "WORK IN PROGRESS" and not a completed book!
Marshall Loring McClanahan worked in the time of typewriters. He had no computer and only, crude, if any, copy machines... so he typed his manuscript on multiple carbon copies of onionskin paper. When he could no longer squeeze in additions or corrections he would completely retype it. Rather than discard the "old incorrect copy" he would give it to a cousin. All in all, I'd say that in over more than 40 years of retyping his "work in progress" there are probably that many versions circulating "out there" somewhere. I, personally, have multiple copies-- very different -- in my possession--including a photocopy of one of the two donated to the LDS Library in SLC, which has been proven to have some errors.
So for information in the THOMAS McCLANAHAN & DOROTHY MOONEY AND SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS "book" we must recognize that much of the information is correct, but its application is questionable, and many versions contain considerable wrong information.. In addition, because the same 1-1/2 dozen male and female given names were used over and over in all generations for 3 centuries, many families have been confused and mixed in Marshall's manuscript. Some examples of incomplete or incorrect information are:

1. MLM has suggested that William McCLANAHAN (son of Dorothy and her McCLANAHAN husband) was born about 1680. However, he was not born until AFTER 1685.
FACTS: Dorothy was married to THOMAS TOWERS until he died (will probated 15 July 1685; land surveyed per court direction to husband of daughter, Sarah in 1699) in Northumberland, VA. Dorothy and Tom TOWERS had 2 children together: Ann TOWERS (b. 7 Apr 1681 and a servant for BOAZ family after 1691) and Sarah TOWERS. Court records in 1690 and 1691 indicate that "Dorothy McCLANAHAN put her daughters" into service in exchange for their education. We have court records and marriage records to prove them. Sarah married Mr. John Williams Jr. and is mentioned in her mother's will probated in 1717. Dorothy married Henry DUNKIN in 1694 so we presume her McCLANAHAN husband died sometime before that--meaning William was born between 1685 and 1694. We have not found ANY proof that Dorothy's McCLANAHAN husband's name was "Thomas." (The McCLANAHAN SOCIETY published a newsletter in September 1997 which included a long article discussion of this "family" and is still available as a "back copy" from the association for a small handling fee.)

2. Supposedly, Marshall L. McCLANAHAN was told by J Adger STEWART, genealogist and historian and one time president of the Filson Club in Louisville, KY, that he hired Lyon G. Tyler to do some research in VA on our McClanahans. Mr. Tyler seems to have given Mr. Stewart some incorrect info, then Mr. Stewart seems to have added to it. As reported by MLM, apparently Mr. Tyler had seen a will for Thomas McCLANAHAN naming Dorothy and her son, William. However, that will could NOT be found THEN (by Marshall L. McCLANAHAN) and cannot be found today. It is likely that Mr. Tyler was confusing [in his preoccupied memory] wills for Thomas TOWERS and Henry DUNKIN, where Dorothy was mentioned and William became the administrator for Henry DUNKIN's will when his widowed mother, Dorothy, married John WATERS. Because of that info from Mr. Tyler (via Mr. Stewart) for awhile Marshall McC thought that Dorothy was married to Mr. McCLANAHAN FIRST and put her marriage before the one to Tom TOWERS and children born in 1681, consequently, MLM placed William's birth date erroneously to be around 1680.

3. Dorothy went on to marry Henry DUNKIN in 1694 and gave birth to three more children: Ann, Sarah, who married John OWENS; and Blanchflower, who married somebody named Lettice.

4.There are no documents or genealogy records showing MOONEY as Dorothy's maiden name. There are various possibilities of maiden names for Dorothy indicated in different versions of Marshall L. McClanahan's work showing Dorothy was a Gerrard, a Byrd, then a MOONEY. Some think that because her only son with Henry DUNKIN was named BLANCHFLOWER DUNKIN, (see my previous omment) her maiden name was BLANCHFLOWER. ( It is my opinion that it was more likely that Dorothy's mother or her mother-in-law was a BLANCHFLOWER, not Dorothy.) There was a respected man in the community by name of Benjamin BLANCHFLOWER, but he married a woman (Temperance GERRARD who was about Dorothy's age) AFTER Dorothy was having children by Tom TOWERS and Mr. McCLANAHAN. There is also the belief that Dorothy was the daughter of NICHOLAS MOONEY, brother of the HUGH MOONEY of Northumberland County, Virginia. NONE of these conjectures are documented.

5. William McCLANAHAN married Martha SMITH about 1726 and began having children by her in 1727/8: Ann/Martha, Thomas, William, Peter, James, and John. William S. McC. (AKA as Rev. William) married Mary MARSHALL, daughter of John MARSHALL and Elizabeth MARKHAM. After the War of Independence, Rev. Wm. S and Mary McC moved to Greenville Co, SC where he died in May 1802. Thomas (AKA "Old Cap't. Tom") married Margaret STROTHER and died in Bourbon County, KY in 1809. Peter married Magdalene (surname unknown) and died in Westmoreland Co, Virginia in 1775. James married Letitia CRABB (not MOONEY) and died in Fauquier Co, Virginia in 1801. John married Keziah HAZELRIGG (Not ?Bailey) and died abt 1795 in Westmoreland Co, Virginia.

6. Ann/Martha McC (d/o Wm. and Martha Smith McCLANAHAN) was the oldest and born about 1727 (?), married Garland MOORE. In November 1770, William and Martha deeded their 80 acres in Richmond County to grandson, Robert Moore.

7. MLM quoted some info from THE MARSHALL FAMILY by W. M. Paxton which also has erroneous information. Both Mr. Paxton and Mr. McClanahan served a great need for their exhaustive research in the MARSHALL and McCLANAHAN families, Their work should be admired and respected, but NOT taken as "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth"

Patije's NOTE: Thanks for reading! I have lots of information about these families which is NOT included here, but I think I covered most of the erroneous information in most researcher's correspondence. It is my hope to be of help to you and not to discourage you. I hope you will continue to be in touch with me as you continue to search and uncover other discrepancies in the information which you gather from many places but may ultimately come back to these same sources. I am EAGER to learn all I can from all sources, if for no other reason than to hunt down the truth of them!

Notable(1904-1990) Marshall L. McClanahan compiled, after John Wesley Houghton's 1912 Houghton Genealogy, the second most extensive Houghton Genealogy in order "to correct John Wesley Houghton", basing his compilation partially on the data supplied by Dr. Harris Ayres Houghton.
NoteCJV: Marshall L. McClanahan compiled, after John Wesley Houghton's 1912 Houghton Genealogy, the second most extensive Houghton Genealogy in order "to correct John Wesley Houghton", basing his compilation partially on the data supplied by Dr. Harris Ayres Houghton. In reference to JWH, McClanahan states: "Tho much of his work is correct, he was charged with being a careless worker in assembling facts." While he does cite vital records, McClanahan did not consistently cite sources for his data, with many typographic errors (incl. pagination of vital records) (he used a typewriter).

MLM, John Houghton: "This MSS was started to correct some of the errors in Dr. John W. Houghton's Volume, but much is still unproved. The Rev. Frederick Weis Volume "Early Families of Lancaster, Mas, printed 1941, may have been based on the findings of Doctor Harris Ayer Houghton and of Amelia Telford as this is to some extent. Dr. John W. Houghton was descended from Ralph Houghton, emigrant; he made more errors on that line than on the descendants of John Houghton, emigrant. The Connecticut Houghtons were apparently not connected to any close degree with the Lancaster Mass. Houghtons. From the third and fourth generations, much of this data is based on secondary information. Much of Dr. Houghton's data cannot be disproved, but he was charged with carelessly assembling his data. His daughter wrote that he lost money on his book. Latter heirs were not discovered. So, this material is presented largely as a guide for later researchers. Marshall L. McClanahan."
