Con. M. BUCK, 59, retired Santa Fe division engineer, died Thursday at his home 322 Greenwood avenue. He retired from the Santa Fe, July 1, 1932. Mr. BUCK was born at Oskaloosa, November 19, 1873. He was graduated from the Kansas State Agricultural College in 1896 and entered the service of the railroad in 1898. He was made division engineer in 1906 and two years later resigned from the position.
Rentering the employ of the Santa Fe in 1913, he again became division engineer in 1914.
Besides his widow, Mr. BUCK is survived by his mother, Mrs. C.A.
BUCK, Oskaloosa; a son, Houghton BUCK of Topeka; a daughter, Miss Nadine BUCK of Emporia; two sisters, Mrs. R.S. DICK, of Topeka, and Mrs. H.L. JOHNSON of Oskaloosa; and three brothers, J.S. BUCK and W.V. BUCK, chief engineer of the state highway department and C.F. BUCK of Kansas City.
He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Tau fraternities, and received his civil engineering degree at Manhattan in 1915. He was a member of Arab Shrine, Media Grotto, Scottish Rite and Siloam Lodge No. 225, and Toltec Rite.

Funeral services will be at Grace Cathedral Saturday afternoon at 2
o'clock. Burial will be at Manhattan, Kan., in Sunset Hill cemetery2

Dear Zella,

I was glad to hear from you last Easter time and meant to write right away but do not seem to get the time.
Enclosed you will find a postcard to tell you what I am doing now. Came down here to start the School in June. We are renting the 6th floor of a building that used to be a hospital and have had a terrible time getting the renovations done - so had to open October 25th in temporary quarters. We have had to move twice: 30 children and 3 rockers to say nothing of all the equipment we have for children from 3-6 yrs. But we are quite certain now of getting in after Christmas, and it looks so pretty I can't wait. One room is blue, one is green, hall yellow, office green with red chairs. Wish you could see it!
Hope you are comfortable and have a nice room-mate. Mother joins me in sending love and Christmas greetings to you.

ObituaryMay 14, 2015NORTHBOROUGH - Priscilla Houghton, died peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2015, in Northborough at The Whitney Place retirement and nursing care facility in her 91st year. She was a longtime resident of Fitchburg. Very fondly known by her family and friends as "Pilly", she was the beloved daugter of Ruth and Earnest Houghton. She was a devote Christian, wonderful friend, dedicated teacher, compassionate care giver, and loved by her Canadian family and her dear friends near and far.
A memorial service celebrating Priscilla's life is being offered at Glenwood Cemetery in Ashby on Sunday, May 17th at 1 p.m. Phyllis Hughes, her Guardian Angel, and the staff of the Whitney Place have been so wonderful in caring for her wellbeing and we are deeply thankful. We, her family and friends have been truly blessed by Pilly's presence in our lives. Published in Sentinel & Enterprise from May 14 to May 15, 2015

BiographyJenna Morris: Our best guest right now is that he is the son of John Strine (1837-1905) But this is still unconfirmed. A 5 year old William Strine is seen with Susanna Emig on the 1870 census.
Stuart Brenner, 2014: I do know he lived in Ohio with Henry Houghton an Susanna (Annie) Emig Houghton. I think his obituary states Henry and Susanna as his parents and there are newspapers articles listing his brothers and sisters as Henry and Susanna's children. Even the census's list his dad from Vermont and his mom from Germany but he is not living with Henry and Annie in the 1880 census. Henry was fifteen when William was born and Henry didn't marry Annie till 1872. So Henry I assume would either be his adopted dad or step dad depending upon whether he was Annie's child. The 1870 census shows Susan (Annie) Emig living in the same household as a five year old William Strine who I think later changed his name to William Houghton.

William H. Houghton of Marion, OH, owned the Houghton Sulky Company. Harness race sulkies were his major product. He sold sulkies to Ringling Bros. Circus. He was a friend of John Ringling North, the owner of Ringling Bros.

William H. Houghton is officially identified with a number of the leading manufacturing concerns of Marion County, and is a representative business man of this section of the State. He was born in Wayne County, Ohio, November 17, 1864, and is a son of Henry and Susanna (Scott) Houghton. After completing a common-school education, Mr. Houghton learned the carpenter's trade at which he worked until 1884. His chance for promotion came when he was appointed superintendant of the buildings for the new State Fair Grounds, at Columbus, Ohio. After he served two years as such, he went into the lumber business, purchasing a half interest in a mill at Dalton, Ohio. The business prospered under his management until 1890, when he went to Harriman, Tennesseee, where he engaged in the same business. Two years later he established himself, with his father-in-law, Martin Schultz, at Dalton, Ohio, in the manufacturing of wagons and carriages, one of their specialties being the manufacture of circus wagons. They continued to push this wagon business until the spring of 1895, when the plant burned down and Mr. Houghton lost everything he had.

In October 1895 he removed to Marion, Ohio and became superintendant of The National Wagon Company of this city. After one year's management of this concern, he had so matured his plans that he was able to organize his own company, under the name of The Houghton Buggy Company. At the end of the first year, he and T. J. McMurray formed a partnership and re-established The McMurray Sulky Company, and continued both the buggy and sulky business under one management until 1901.

The Houghton-Merkel Company was organized under the laws of the State of Ohio, December 1, 1901 to take over the buggy business. The capital stock of the company paid-in is $26,000.00 (as of December 1906). The company wholesales and retails all kinds of vehicles and farm implements.
Its specialty is building high-grade buggies and delivery wagons of all kinds to order, besides running a general buggy repair shop. The officers of the
company are W. H. Houghton, President; L.W. Ireland, Vice-President, and Charles E. Merkel, secretary and treasurer. Investors include J. B. Gunder

October 1, 1903, Mr. Houghton sold his interest in The McMurray Sulky Company and the year following established The Houghton Sulky Company, of which he has been president from its organization.

The Houghton Sulky Company was organized under the laws of Ohio in 1904, with a capitalization of $50,000.00. The company manufactures high-grade racing and pleasure vehicles. About 70 men, nearly all skilled mechanics, are employed. The factory, a three-story, brick building with basement, was erected in 1904, on Lincoln Avenue, just north of the "Big Four" and Erie Railroads, at a cost of $30,000.00. The plant is a modern one employing many skilled workers. The value of the annual output of the company is $120,000.00 The officers of the company are: W. H. Houghton, President and Treasure; Hoke W. Donithen, Vice President; and Vernon Gordon Stair, Secretary.

Mr. Houghton is also president of the Marion Savings Bank. The Marion Savings Bank, while not the oldest banking concern in the city, is
one of the most progressive and has becoome fully established in the good graces of the people of Marion. Its business is an ample evidence that the
people appreciate courteous treatment. The bank began business May 16, 1904, with a capital of $50,000. Its deposits now amount to $200,000.00. It does a general commercial and savings business. The officers are: W. H. Houghton , President; A. Barron, Vice-president; Benjamin F. Waples, cashier; S. H. DeLong, assistant cashier. The directors are: W.H. Houghton, A. Barron, Benjamin F. Waples, J. W. Jacoby, C.E. Merkel, John Schneider, S. G. Kleinmaier, John Rexroth, M. Lawrence, J. E. Phillips, R. T. Lewis, J. Bindley, Philip Loyer, J. B. Gunder and P.F. Foreman.

The Houghton-Merkel Company.

The Houghton-Merkel Company was organized under the laws of the State of Oh December 1, 1901 to take over the buggy business of the McMurray Sulky Company. He was christened at German Reformed, Dalton, Wayne, Ohio, U.S.A.. He was born on 17 November 1864 at Dalton, Wayne, Ohio, U.S.A..1,2 He was the son of Henry Houghton and Susanna Emig. William Henry Houghton married Clara Isabel Schultz, daughter of Martin Schultz and Eva Catharina Eckard, in 1889. Dec. 1969 in Akron Ohio; Agnes Radie Schultz, b. 1882, no other info; Oron Dallas Schultz, b. January 25, 1878, d. BiographyDaughter of Martin Schultz 1832 – 1908 & Catharine Eckhard 1845 – 1912 She attended school in Dalton until she was fourteen years old and remained at home a large part of the time until her marriage to William Hugh Houghton Nov 28, 1889. They lived in Dalton, Ohio, moved to Harriman, Tennesse, briefly, and then to Marion Ohio. They establsihed a buggy and wagon business in Marion Ohio, later with cousin Charles Emanuel Merkel, establishing the Houghton Merkel Sulky Company. She was christened at Presbyterian, Dalton, Wayne, Ohio, U.S.A.. She was born on 25 June 1866 at Dalton, Wayne, Ohio, U.S.A.. She was the daughter of Martin Schultz and Eva Catharina Eckard. Clara Isabel Schultz married William Henry Houghton, son of Henry Houghton and Susanna Emig, in 1889. Clara Isabel Schultz was buried on 30 August 1963 at Marion, Marion, Ohio, U.S.A.. She died on 30 August 1963 at 218 Vine St, Marion, Marion, Ohio, U.S.A., at age 97.
