Story:     by Jean Hart, November 17, 1977
SAN CLEMENTE -- It was the lawless time of the bandito bands that raided the Mexican-American borders.

Major William Houghton, in the best tradition of the wise, old storyteller, recounted his encounters with Pancho Villa.

Villa and his men had been sneaking up to the border camps at night and cutting loose army picket lines. At first, American generals tried to talk with Villa across the barbed wire border fence.

"I happened to be out riding and accidentally ran into them talking, so I stopped to listen," Houghton said. "Villa was a huge man, broad-shouldered, muscular and a bit portly."

But after a while, the American general realized he was getting nowehere with Villa and walked off in disgust, leaving Villa with his foot on the wire and his mouth open," Houghton said.

But the raids continued, until "General Pershing had had enough," and sent soldiers 300 miles into Mexico to hunt him down. Houghton and his men ended up eating hard tack and an occasional wild steer for the year they spent in Mexico's interior. Villa was never located.

Houghton's distinguished military career began at West Point where he graduated in 1913, a year ahead of Eisenhower and 17th in his class.

After his time spent along the southern border and in Mexico, he was sent overseas during "the first big war." He already spoke fluent French and Spanish learned at the academy. He served as aide to General Greble while they brought supplies and made inspection tours of the allied troops.
Houghton remembered visiting one French trench in Belguim which was about 100 yards from the German lines. Their arrival apparently gave away the troops position and the Germans began bombarding the foxholes with explosives.

"The trench was too small and the explosives didn't get in, but it would have been our necks if they had," he said. "I'll never forget how deep the trench was and how muddy."

He taught continuously throughout his career, at various officers training schools and in Washington D.C. and at Yale before he retired. In 1919 he was transferred to the isthmus of Panama to guard the canal from the threat of Japan.

While on leave from there he married his wife, Florence. He had met her while she was married to his Captain, who was killed coming back from France.

He took his wife and her sister, the now Vida McLaughlin of San Clemente, back to Corozel, Panama with him.

"It was very nice there," Mrs. McLaughlin said, "the area was tropical and we enjoyed our stay there."

Houghton now lives in San Clemente, moving here in 1946. He had retired in Oregon, in 1934, at the age of 45 but spent his winters in Laguna Beach, coming to San Clemente to golf. They eventually liked it so well, they bought a home here.6
