BiographyBrandt: Celina (Houghton) Brooks lived in Roxbury VT at the time of her marriage. She spent the last years of her life living with her sister, Nancy Mungle, where she died of stone cancer of the stomach. She is buried in the cemetery at Brimfield, IL. as are Solomen and Amelia (Fisher) Brooks. A stone marks her grave.
George Metcalf is buried at Galva, IL. where a son erected a stone bearing the names of both George and Celina, but did not have her body moved to Galva.
George and Celina came to IL from Chester, VT about 1841, with a group of families, mostly related. They stopped first at Olney, IL., where a daughter, Mary Amelia, was born. The low swampy land there was so different from the Vermont hills that they moved on to Galva, IL. He had a farm near Brimfield IL, where the stagecoach made its regular stops. The old house on this farm was still in use and in good condition in 1959.
It is believed when the family came to IL, the old grandmother, Mary (Bigelow) Brooks, wife of Nathan Brooks, was with them and that she died in Olney, IL.8
