Central Plastics co-founder Chester Houghton sits in one of the two recliners located at the company office. Houghton spends most of his days relaxing at the office, enjoying coffee.

McPherson, Kan. —

Most days, deep inside Central Plastics, nestled in an office, you’ll find a man reclining in an easy chair, sipping coffee and watching TV.
That man is Chester Houghton, a co-founder of Central Plastics. He’s 91 years-old now, but age has yet to take him from the company he created.
Several days a week his three sons, Mark, Dennis and Kent, take turns hosting Chester (or Chet as he’s called) in their offices. Two offices in the plant feature easy chairs and TVs, so Chet can settle down wherever he wants.
“My daily routine is to come down here and see my sons,” he said.
He generally spends the day relaxing, visiting with people who come through, hoping to hear a good story and sharing his quick wit.
“I’m old enough to vote,” he said when the topic of his age came up.
That’s a lot different than how he used to spend his days, when he ran the company.
“What we do is really an extension of what he once did. He ran the office, he ran sales, he could make machine tools,” Mark said.
One by one as his three sons came to work for Central Plastics, they took on more and more of the responsibilities and although they would eventually run the company, that didn’t mean they received any special treatment.
“He pretty much treated us how he treated anyone else on the floor. If he was mad or upset with you, he’d tell you right away. Any dirty laundry would be aired,” Mark said.
The sons provided a slow transition for Chet to transition out of work as each of them took over management of a different part of the company.
Now, he gets to sit back and enjoy the coffee.
“You always want to be around the coffee. Pick up your vitamins,” he said.
And that’s an arrangement that’s just fine with his sons.
“He’s fortunate that we’re around and we’re fortunate that he’s around,” Mark said.

Boy Didn't Know a Revolver Was Loaded--
Luther Houghton , age 14 , Shot Above the Ear--
Poor Little Fellow May Die.
-----------------------

Brown City, Michigan ., Jan. 28-Special.-
Luther Houghton and Stewart Gibbs , both about
14 years of age , played "the assassination of
Lincoln" at the latter's house. During the absence
of his parents , with Luther in the title role.
At the climax of the play Stewart pointed a 22-
caliber revolver at his playmate, not knowing that
it was loaded and pulled the trigger. To his horror
the weapon was discharged, and Luther wounded just
above the ear. He will probably die. Both Boys are
of good families, The Gibbs boy is grief stricken ,
but no blame is attached to him as the shooting was
purely accidental
