Mrs. John Donald Houghton, Jr., 75, of Deerfield township, died Wednesday at the family residence after an illness of 15 months. She was born in Winn on August 2, 1892, and had lived in Deerfield township, for 30 years. She worked at Ferro’s for 15 years until she retired at age 65. She was a member of the Deerfield Methodist Church and Winn Order of Eastern Star.
The Houghtens had been married 53 years.
Funeral services will be held from Stinson Funeral Home with Rev. Arlo Varidlen officiating. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, John Donald Houghton, and the children, Mrs. Roy (Eleanor) Nelson, John Donald (Jack) Houghton, Jr, L. Maurice Houghton of Vestal, New York, William Houghton of Shepherd, Mrs. Richard (Elaine) Wood and Kenneth S. Houghton of Mt. Pleasant. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. John Dumas of Midland and a brother Clayton Taylor of South Bend, Indiana, 27 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Biographysecond daughter of Lawrence Leander Taylor and Uretta Loe; brother Clayton Taylor of South Bend, IN and a sister Mrs. John Dumas of Midland MI survived her. She had 27 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren at her death.1

John "Jack" Donald Houghton, Jr., 90, of Mount Pleasant died peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 12, 2007.
Funeral services for Jack will be held on Monday, April 16th at 11 a.m. from the Mt. Pleasant Community Church with Rev. Scott McKee and Rev. Malcolm Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 15th from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service and on Monday, April 16th from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons, Mt. Pleasant Community Church or Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be at the funeral chapel and the church.

Jack was born on October 15, 1916 in Mount Pleasant, the son of John D. and Blanche (Taylor) Houghton, Sr. He lived in Detroit until he was 16. The remainder of his life was spent in Deerfield Township of Isabella County. He married Jean Sparks of Ithaca on August 22, 1943 in Winn, Michigan. Jack served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1944 until 1946 during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a brick and stone Mason learning the trade from his father. For over sixty years he was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen.

He was a Charter member of the Mt. Pleasant Community Church. Jack was a long time member and supporter of the Gideon work in Clare and Isabella Counties. After his retirement in 1981 he donated much if his time doing Christian mission work. He spent months at a time at an Indian School in Arizona and a boy's school in Honduras and shorter times on projects in Indiana, Kentucky, Florida and the Carolinas. His greatest joy was working with men from the church on local projects taking a number of them with him on short trips to Kentucky and Honduras.

Jack is survived by his wife, Jean of 63 years; daughter, Nora (Forrest) Wellman of Eaton Rapids and son, John D. III (Michele) of Commerce Township; grandchildren, Jerry (Cheri) Middlesworth of Weidman, Wendy (Mark) Tozer of Hesperia, Jacob (Janell) Dent of Grays Lake, IL, John IV (Leah) Houghton of Milford and Keely Houghton of Commerce Twp; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two brothers, Lee (Jean) of Mt. Pleasant and Welbie (Betty) of Kissimmee, FL; one sister, Elaine Wood of Midland; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Houghton and Donna Houghton of Mt. Pleasant; two sons-in-law, Douglas (Kay) Middlesworth of Weidman and Michael Sylvester of Lansing.

Jack was preceded in death by his daughters, Mary Middlesworth and Janet Sylvester; brothers, William Houghton and Scott Houghton; sister, Eleanor Nelson and brothers-in-law, Roy Nelson and Richard Wood.2
