BiographyClarendon, Aug. 9--The 14th annual Old Home Sunday of the Old Brick church in Clarendon, which has stood on the Clarendon
Green for 124 years, will be observed August 15. The Rev. Ola R. Houghton of Wallingford will be the guest speaker. Mr. Houghton was born in Lyndon, graduated from Middlebury High school, and attended Middlebury college. He served as deputy collector and
inspector of customs at Alburgh from 1902 through 1909. He inspected the personal effects and luggage of from 50 to 400
people a night. The was a job which required phychological finesse and infinite patience, and was, he feels, splendid training for later work
in the ministry. He worked at night for the customs , and days he spent getting his seminary eduction at the Congregational College of Canada. He graduated in 1908. His first parish was Bakersfield where he was ordained in 1909. In 1915 he moved to Wallingford where he has served for the past 33 years. His official charge has been Wallingford and South Wallingford, but he has extended his pastoral work through all of Clarendon and Tinmouh. There are only two or three houses in Clarendon where he has not ministered in times of sickness, accident or death. He has been registrar of the Rutland County Association of Ministers for 28 years and he has served as president and as chairman of the board of directors of Vermont Congregational conference.
He was pastor of the Wallingford Congregational Church16

ResearchPicturesque Putney: "The farm [Houghton] was one of the earliest settled pieces of land in the town and was purchased by the ancestors of the present proprietor from Peter Stuyvesant, the Dutch Governor of New York, when this section of territory was a part of New York. The Houghton family is directly descended from the three brothers, William, John and Thomas, who came from England to Lancaster, Mass., in the early days of New England. It will thus be seen that this family have been resident in this locality nearly 200 years. "
