Biography1692Canton Hx: "This Mrs. Blackman's mother had a curious and interesting history. It is said that she married Ralph Houghton, Jr., and that at the age of 28 she was at Jamaica in the West Indies, at the time of the great earthquake in that island. The history of Dorchester gives the following extract from an old manuscript: "In 1692 Mrs. Mary Horton, widow of Ralph Horton, was sunke in ye earthquake at Jemeco the seventh day of June, between eleven and twelve a clock at nune. Ye above named person was then 28 years of age from March ye last past." Another account says she heard and felt the earthquake, and rushed to the door; and as the place sunk in the water, she clung to the sill of the house, which separated from the building. She remained in the water three days and three nights, when a vessel passed by and she was taken on board. Her trunk of clothing floated within her reach and was saved. She afterward lived at a tavern in Dorchester, and waited on travellers. One day a stranger entered the tavern to put up for the night; she recognized him as her husband, and the shock was such that they both fainted, -- he having supposed that she was lost in the earthquake, and she that he was lost at sea, being gone on a voyage at the time of the disaster. Another version of the story is that he was lost with her at Jamaica, and was picked up by another vessel."13

DeathApr 9, 1767Canton, Norfolk Co., MA, USA, Canton Hx: "An ancient record informs me that on the ninth of April, 1767, the widow Mary Houghton, died, aged one hundred and four yearss and eleven days; and in an ancient diary kept by one of the fathers of the town I find this record: "April 10, 1767, Mrs. Mary Horton buried, aged one hundred and five years."

Edelman: obituary (in Index of Obituaries in Boston Newspapers, 1704-1795 (Boston, 1968), 2:538) "states, amid other erroneous data, that Mary Horton died 8 April 1767, aged 105. The same information appears in the Connecticut Courant of 11 May 1767, with the variation that Mary was aged 150 -- an obvious misprint."

ProblemPer Harvard Records [death of Thomas], this Thomas can't be father of Phebe Gerry's children; Maine Families in 1790 continues the erroneous tradition of identifying this Thomas with husband of Phebe Gerry3
ResearchDinsmore Genealogy: "In correspondence with J. W. Houghton who wrote the Houghton Genealogy...he very kindly wrote to me [CJV: Gertrude Weston] the following: "On further examination, I conclude that the Thomas you are seeking was b. in 1731; was the son of Thomas Houghton and Mariah Moore, both of Lancaster, Mass.: Thomas, b. in 1696; Mariah, b. 1699; m. Dec. 2, 1725; his father was James, son of Ralph.
"Thomas of 1731 had sisters Hannah and Mariah and brother Elijah who succeeded his father in the ownership of the Houghton House. My record of Thomas, b. 1731, stops with record of his birth.
"I conjecture that he is the man you are looking for because the date allows it. His descendants may be the members of your family. I think that is right. My record does not give the name of his wife."; Uran gives this Thomas as husband of Phebe Gerry;

CJV: JWH is apparently wrong; why did younger brother Elijah inherit homestead if older brother Thomas was alive? There was no Thomas, son of Thomas and Mariah, born in Harvard or Bolton, and no marriage of these two in either place.

Ira Terry: "Charles this is what I wrote the day I found Thomas Jr. the son of Ephraim. The source is Worchester Co. Mass Deeds (FHL 843,175). After researching this line for 30 years I finally found the connection on Apr 11, 1999. Thomas Houghton that married Phebe was called Thomas Houghton Jr. of Harvard Mass at the time of his marriage. I had been looking for a Thomas Houghton Sr. as the father all this time. I found a deed that said Ephraim Houghton gave land to his beloved son Thomas Houghton Jr. of Harvard. As it turns out this Ephraim is the brother of Thomas Houghton who we thought was the father of Thomas Jr. This Thomas Houghton did have a son Thomas but he died at age 4. Ephraim named his son Thomas Jr. apparently in memory of his nephew the son of Thomas Houghton Sr. "

As it turns out Thomas Jr. born in 1731 was the son of Ephraim Houghton as I mentioned before. His brother was Thomas Sr. For many years we thought that Thomas Jr. was the son of Thomas Sr. But the son of Thomas Sr. who was named Thomas Jr. died at age 4. So that threw that line out. Deeds mentioned that Ephraim Houghton had a son named Thomas Jr. Apparently after the death of Thomas Jr. the son of Thomas Sr. Ephriam the brother of Thomas Sr. named his own son Thomas Jr. I hope this all makes sense.11,12,13,14
