BiographyBoston Transcript, 1913, Nauset: "John (2) Horton, son of Thomas (1) and Mary Horton, born at Springfield, Mass. about 1639-1640, married, on March 1, 1667, Abigail, daughter of Lieutenant Joshua Fisher of Dedham. Child, Mary (3), born Jun 10, 1668, died July 15, 1668, in Northampton. The record reads: "Mary, daughter of John Hotten." John (3), born Dedham, Jan. 23, 1669-70, was probably the John Holton who died in Northampton, April 16, 1689. Sarah (3), born Oct 6, 1673. William (3), born Dedham, July 13, 1675, married Abigail Edwards, Dec. 5, 1706. Will probated at Northampton Jan. 13, 1756. Abigail (3), (born when?), married John Lyman, son of Richard and Hepzibah (Ford) Lyman, and died Nov. 24, 1714. Administration granted to William and Eleazer Holton, May 16, 1715. Thomas (3), born Oct. 23, 1681, married Mindwell Allen. He was killed by the Indians Aug. 13, 1723. When was Eleazer (3) born? He married June 28, 1716, Sarah, daughter of John and Sarah (Gaylord) Alexander, and died March 2, 1746-7.
John Horton, alias Holton, and his wife Abigail were admitted to membership in the First Church at Northampton under Rev. Solomon Stoddard's ministry, which commenced in 1672. Perhaps the Dedham Church records might show the dismissal of Abigail to Northampton at Least, if it did not show that of her husband.
Appended is a copy of the will of John Horton, alias Holton, of Northampton, written in about the seventy-third year of his life. [CJV: will, of Mar 26, 1712, given, listing wife Abigail, sons William, Thomas, Joshua, Eleazer, daughter Abigail Lyman; proved Apr 24, 1712]

Note. In John Horton's deed of his Dedham lands he calls them "denized premises," thus proclaiming that they were lands acquired by residence as a citizen and not by inheritance. Nauset."

Boston Transcript, 11/12/1924: W.B.B.N.: "Concerning the John Houghton who married Abigail Fisher in Dedham in 1666-67, my idea is that he was really Holton, a name he used at times, although he adopted the other spelling in later life."

Boston Transcript, 1934 - 2311, JCLC: "If, then, this John Houghton was born about 1631, it is a less roundabout process, to say the least, to identify him with the John who appears in Dedham records in 1651...than with either of the Johns christened at Eton Bray in 1593 and 1624 respectively. Although he is occasionally called Holton, I am far from being convinced that this John of Dedham had no right to the name of Houghton. He signed the Dedham covenant "John Hovghton." The following facts about him were gathered some time ago, from the printed Dedham records. It is fair to picture him as a struggling youth, without near kindred. In 1651 he was taxed for a house valued at only four shillings. His name appears on Dedham tax lists from 1653 to 1677. He was admitted a townsman Jan. 1, 1654-5. Feb. 20, 1656-7, he was granted commons for three sheep, which, upon his complaining with others of "bein strytned" in the matter of pasturage, was extended to "2 cowe Commons 2 Sheep Commons." Dec. 31, 1663, John Fairbanks and John Houghton, were granted one pound two shillings "for mendinge the cart bridge into Iland." Dec. 28, 1666, leave was granted him by the selectmen "to sojourne at the home Lieft [Joshua] Fisher," whose daughter Abigail (born February, 1648-9) he married the following March 1. They had, born in Dedham: John, Jan. 23, 1669-70; William, July 13, 1675.
From 1677, I find no trace of this John Houghton (or Holton)..."

BT, 1925: "The correspondent seems to infer that John Houghton of Lancaster did not ever reside at Dedham. But we find the births of all his older children recorded to him as resident of that town with wife Beatrix. There it is not safe to ascribe to John Holton all the references on Dedham records. I have met no case where John of Lancaster used the name Holton, whereas the man at Dedham used that name frequently. We know there were Holtons about there and we know early recorders were very free in the use of surnames. The lands owned by the John of 1651 at Dedham agree closely with lands sold by the known John Houghton.
A search ast Cambridge would disclose whether the Holton children retained that name or not. I suspect that they did. Where the correspondent found "it was generlly conceded that Joh of Lancaster came about 1650" I know not . Such a surmise does not appear in all the material I have been through. It is significant that a John Houghton appears on Dedham records from 1651 until 1663, the presumbable date of the removal to Lancaster, judging from the places of birth of the children. From 1663 to 1666 no one of the name appears. Then in 1667 occurred the marriage of John Holton to Abigail Fisher and that in 1663 John Houghton was paying tax on his house, plainly a married man with family.
I cannot see any other way to look at it than to say that John Holton did not appear in Dedham until about four years after the Houghton family moved away."

W. G. Snow: The will of Joshua Fisher Sr of Medfield, Mass. dated May 2 1674 bequeths "to Abigail Houghton, wife of John Houghton, my grant child, L5."24,9,25,1,26,4,11,2
