ObituarySep 7, 1907Monmouth Beach, NJ, USA, NY Times: M. N. Houghton
Monmouth Beach, N. J. Sept. 7.-- M. H. Houghton, one of the pioneer settlers of this resort, died early this morning at a private hospital in New York, at the age of 71. He had been ill for several weeks, death resulting from uraemic poisoning. Because of his illness Mr. Houghton was obliged to give up the management of the Monmouth Beach Clubhouse in July, his brother Col. C. M. Houghton succeeding him.
On his retirement Mr. Houghton journeyed to his old home at Amherst, Mass., but he gradually grew worse and was brought to to New York for treatment. The body was brought here today. Funeral services will be held at the clubhouse. He leaves two sons, Dr. S. H. Houghton and Clarence Houghton, a lawyer, both of New York.
Mr. Houghton was born at Amherst, Mass. At the solicitation of J. Wyman Jones, Mr. Houghton came to this place when a young man. After settling here he purchased the old Wardell farm for $1,000, and on this site the Monmouth Beach Clubhouse was erected.
It was largely through the energies of Mr. Houghton that the salt meadow lying between Manahasset Creek and the sea was developed until it has become one of the most picturesque Summer resorts of the New Jersey coast.9
