ResearchLorna Dunklee : Most of the info I have gleaned says that James Eastman, son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Pearse Eastman, was born in 1761, but I am very doubtful of that date. Jonathan was of Ashford, CT and later came to NH and joined the Shakers at Canterbury. I have a marriage date for James[unconfirmed as yet from original sources] of 6 May 1773 in NH [probably Cheshire County]. That makes either the birthdate or the marriage date wrong, as he would have been only 12 years old if he was born in 1761.
The History of Chesterfield, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, by Oren E. Randall (Brattleboro, VT: D. Leonard, printer, 1882), p 287 has this to say:
"EASTMAN, James, was here in 1789, but the name soon disappears. His wife was Esther -------.
The following ch. were recorded in the records of this town: [note from Lorna: that does not necessarily mean they were BORN there, as I have discovered from other families] Joanna, b Mar. 6,
1775, and m. (probably) 1792, Flint Johnson [note from Lorna: this is Edward Flint Johnson];
Sally, b. Dec. 3, 1778, and d. 1791; Betsey, b. Mar. 15, 1782; Lydia, b. Mar. 27, 1784; James, b.
Oct. 20, 1786; Esther, b. Aug. 4, 1789."
Other children were apparently born after the family moved to Newfane, VT. A person posting on the WorldConnect project of Rootsweb.com lists: Polly, b 19 July 1797; Nancy, b c1800; Lorin, b 7 Aug 1804...and then lists with dates and places unknown: Ruth and William. I have no idea how accurate any of this is. A lot of the info came from an Eastman genealogy that, as far as I can tell, has MANY errors. Note that the birthdates for children in the Chesterfield history conflict with a marriage date of 1785 for James and Esther.2

BiographyJWH:: 'Settled first in west part of Berlin, on the place owned by Silas S. Mills; sold to Obadiah Wheeler, 1768. M. Experience Pike of Framingham, Mass. M. 2d, Mary Taylor of Boyleston, Mass., 1790, d. 5,25, 1838, aged 86. He was a moving character; was in Putney, Vt., where several Berlin people settled; afterward in Framingham, and in Boyleston. In the latter place was made deacon; went finally to his old homestead in West Berlin, in 1798, after an absence of 20 years.'

BT: He moved around so much that service is not easy to find. He might be found in Barry's Framingham along with genealogy of Experience. The Houghton twins [son Caleb's] died before thirty years of age and the rest of the children with the exception of George and William removed to Holliston. All of the above data was taken from Houghton's History of Berlin.

MLM: "Cyrus Houghton and Isaac Miller were chosen comm'rs of highways in Berlin's first town meeting in 1772, but he left shortly afterwards. He had settled in the west part of Berlin on the place owned by Silas S. Mills, who sold it to Obediah Wheeler in 1768. Cyrus and Experience moved to Putney, where several Berlin people had settled. It was then called Fulham, province of New York, and later, Dummerston, Vermont. As residents of Fulham they were admitted to Framingham First Church February 14, 1773, etc. Vide History of Framingham, Mass., by Temple, p. 97...In 1791 Cyrus was a resident of Dummerston in the local ceensus of Windham County. In Maria Hemmenway's Gazateer of Vermont, V. 5, Pt. 2, p. 73 (Dummerston): April 7, 1777, Jonathan Knight, Esq., bought lot #58, Dummerston for $650, with buildings from Cyrus and Experience Houghton. (When Cyrus md. Mary Taylor he gave his residence as Putney, Vermont). This Jonathan Knight is presumably the same one who according to Hall in his History of Eastern Vermont, p. 231) rec'd a charge of shot in the affray at Westminster at the time Daniel Houghton and William French were killed, March 13, 1775. The Federal cenus of 1790 placed Cyrus at Putney with 1-0-1. Vide Pen Draft by Dr. H.A.H. They then moved to Boyleston, Massachusetts, where son, Jonah was born and in 1798, after an absence of twenty years, he returned to Berlin."

Milit-Begbetween 1775 and 1777Putney, Windham Co., VT, USA, According to Putney Histor. Soc.: in Capt. Robt. Langle's Co. of Asa Whitcomb's Regt. April 19, 1775 for eight months as a drummer, and in 1777 Aug for 25 days was in Col. Wm. Williams Regt.

He is mentioned in an article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol 150, July 1996 by Ken Stevens, entitled "Abijah Moore's Company of Cumberland County Minute Men". Most of this militia unit were former Mass. residents who recently had moved to Putney, Vt. and vicinity. They received word of the action at Lexington 3 days after the event, but it took them only 3 1/2 additional days to gather and march the 120 miles to relieve the men in the combat area.

Per pages 342/343: private, of Putney, service for 7 days. Enlisted 26 April 1775 as drummer in Capt. Robert Longley's company in Col. Asa Whitcomb's (23rd) regiment of Continental troops. He also served for 25 days in the Saratoga campaign in Capt. John Petty's company of Col. William Williams' regiment of Vermont militia, which marched from Westminster on 29 August 1777.
p. 329: "Years later Ebenezer Houghton, when applying for a veteran's pension, recalled: "On the 19th of April 1775 I was a resident of Putney, Windham country, Vermont. On Saturday night subsequent this deponent heard the news and on Sunday morning I started for Cambridge." (Abijah Moore's company were the only troops from the Province of NY and the first unit from what now is Vermont to participate in the Rev. War.) Houghton enlisted in the Continental Army at Cambridge on the 26th. They covered the 120 miles in 3 and a half days.

Ebenezer was a drummer in the Revolutionary War. His Revolutionary War pension file states "Ebenezer Houghton of Ostego in the State of New York who was a drummer in the company commanded by Captain Langley of the Regt_ commanded by Col. Whitcomb in the Vermont line for 11 months"
