Boyle: Jane (Steel) Houghton applied for a Revolutionary War pension based on Adonijah’s service, and her surviving children Anna C. and Alvah pursued the application following her death on 5 Feb 1843 in Washington, Sullivan, NH. To prove their parents’ marriage and their own births, Anna and Alvah removed the family pages from the family Bible and those pages are now a part of Adonijah’s Revolutionary War Pension record at the National Archives.9,20,21
BiographySusan G. Boyle: "Adonijah was born 28 May 1758 in Lunenburgh, MA, to Darius Houghton and Jerusha Stearns, and served from there at least twice during the Revolution, briefly in 1776 and for about eight months in 1778. He married Jane Steel, daughter of John Steel and Jane Scott, 9 May 1782 in Washington, Sullivan County [then Cheshire], NH [marriage date and place in family Bible]. They had four children born in Washington: David Houghton, born 19 Sep 1760, died before 1843; Anna Coolidge Houghton, born 9 Feb 1786, married Abner Mead 25 Oct 1807, Walpole, NH, and died 30 Apr 1848 Greenwich, Washington Co., NY; Betsy Houghton born 11 May 1788, died before 1843; and Alvah Houghton born 17 Jul 1795, married Margaret Babcock, 15 Jan 1828, Alstead, Cheshire Co., NH, and died 24 Jan 1871. Adonijah was enumerated in Washington by the 1790 census, but in 1797 he was assessed for taxes in Walpole, Cheshire Co., NH, and that’s where he was in 1800 when the census enumerator visited, NA M32, roll 20, p. 316. The household contained 1 male under age 10, 1 male age 16-26, 1 male age 26-45, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. I have been unable to find the family in 1810. However, in 1814, the town records of Surry, NH, reflect two charges on the town for articles and assistance provided to Adonijah Houghton during his sickness the previous winter. In 1820 Adonijah Houhton (sic) was enumerated in Walpole once again, p. 282, with just him and Jane in the household. His death is recorded there in the town records, vol. 3, p. 520, 1829 deaths [apparently from church records] ? he committed suicide 9 October 1829.
