BiographyJWH: "Served three years in the Civl War; was taken prisoner and confined in Libby prison. When liberated his hair had turned as white as that of a man eighty years of age. While a prisoner he cultivated a few hills of corn in one corner of the prison yard, and when paroled he cut up some of the leaves, a piece of which he gave me and which I preserved and gave to Rev. H. L. Houghton, together with a description which I had printed in our home paper."2
NoteHe was a cabinetmaker before enlisting in the Civil War. He enlisted in August 1861 and served three years as a Sergeant in the 106th Infantry Regiment, Company F, and took part in the battle at Gettysburg. He re-enlisted and was captured in battle at Petersburg, Virginia and was taken to the Andersonville prison in Georgia. After the war, he operated a funeral home in Hughesville for the next 40 years and then moved to Oklahoma where some of his children were living. NoteElmer was the first of John and Fanny's children to move to Oklahoma City when it was still just a frontier town. He opened a restaurant and ultimately he served as a Republican councilman. When he died, his body was returned to Pennsylvania for interment. To my knowledge, Elmer never married. He died on June 12, 1913 and in his latter years, he and his unmarried sister had lived together. Elmer served as a Private in Company M, lst Regiment, in the Philippines in the Spanish-American War.3
